I think there is tremendous potential for a Gulf-Coast oriented FCS league. . .especially when you figure in the possibility of the dissolution of the Southland Conference. . .the University system their could close as many as 8 of its 13 or 14 schools (3 of which are Southland members) if they can't get their finances worked out over the next couple years, and UTSA, Sam Houston and Texas State are hoping to bump up a level.
So, if the A-Sun is patient, they could assemble a league that could be a FCS power.
Also if the schools see tremendous growth and profitability, they could grow into an FBS league (assuming the power conferences haven't left the NCAA).

That's 8. If you can get North Florida and Corpus-Christi to add, that's 10 schools, most with remarkable growth potential.
With some of the changes ongoing in DII, three or four schools may practically be forced to FCS just to schedule enough football games: North Alabama, Delta State, West Georgia, and Valdosta State.
UNA's home could be the OVC, Delta to the Southland, and WGU and VSU to the Big South.
DII Gulf South conference splitting, Lone Star Conference splitting
Well North Alabama has already voiced a desire for FCS, haven't they? If UWG and VSU wanted to go non-scholly, I think they could make it in D-1. Do you think the A-Sun would be interested in them? Perhaps UWF as well?

Since the ASUN only expands for DII teams, yes, I think they would be interested.

RE: A-Sun should start IAA football
It's more up to the schools in the ASUN versus the ASUN conference themselves. If the schools bring on non-scholarship football the conference would almost have to adopt it.

RE: A-Sun should start IAA football
The GSC schools would want to join the OVC(UNA),SLC(Delta St.) and Big South(Valdosta St., UWG, UWF) because they'd stay scholly football. A-Sun's best options would be W.Florida who doesn't have football yet. They could be A-Sun and fb affiliate when they start for the Big South. The others that at interested in the A-Sun would likely be Lincoln Memorial(no fb) and Longwood(no fb). Would you guys expand north into Va. to get Longwood?
