Appalachian State is expected to name Jason Capel its next basketball coach, a source says.

Capel would replace Buzz Peterson, who resigned last week to take the job at UNC Wilmington.

Capel, a former North Carolina player, was hired by Peterson last season as an assistant. It's the only coaching experience Capel has.

Capel, 30, is the brother of Oklahoma coach Jeff Capel and the son of Charlotte Bobcats assistant Jeff Capel Jr.

Jason Capel, who helped the Tar Heels to the 2000 Final Four, played professionally in Serbia, Japan and Italy, as well as for Fayetteville in the NBA's Developmental League.

He worked as a television analyst on Raycom and ESPNU for two seasons before joining Peterson at Appalachian.

Well, that settles that.

Interesting choice. He only has 10 months of actual coaching experience.

Not only that, but I know I read ASU's AD was saying they'd go on a lengthy search.

well that will certainly save Appy some money. With that resume he might be paying them to get to coach.

Does ETSU play ASU next season?

If so, I think we can count that as a victory.

Has anyone heard an official announcement about Capel yet? It's not on App State's website. I'm starting to wonder if it's really a done deal.
