Jeff Clement Earns Freshman Co-National Player Of The Year Honors
Trojan catcher hit 21 homers in first season.

LOS ANGELES -- USC freshman catcher Jeff Clement earned 2003 Louisville Slugger Freshman Co-National Player of the Year honors as announced by Collegiate Baseball. Clement was one of four players named for the honor and is the 11th Trojan to earn Freshman All-American honors.

He is the second Trojan to be named Freshman National Player of the Year (Eric Munson in 1997 by The Sporting News).

In his first season at USC, Clement earned Pac-10 Conference Freshman of the Year honors after batting .298 with 21 home runs and 53 RBI. His 21 home runs were the most by any freshman in USC history. Clement started in all 56 games with 42 starts as the catcher and 14 as the designated hitter.

He led the Trojans in home runs, RBI, slugging percentage, total bases, runs and walks. He recorded two or more home runs in a game five times during the season and hit three home runs with seven RBI on May 16 vs. Washington State. Clement was named Pac-10 Conference Player of the Week twice during the season.

This month, Clement will participate in the U.S. National Team Trials as the 20-man roster will be determined. The U.S. National Team will compete in August at the Pan American Games in the Dominican Republic.
