It'll be interesting to see how he does. Experience naturally doesn't mean success, but I do think that the odds of someone who has experience (not necessarily political) versus a college freshman performing better is a much safer a bet. He'll have to deal with issues related to personnel management, decent size budgets, council egos, unions, etc. I know he has a year on the council, and I'm hopeful that he's successful, but I still view this as a high risk choice (which also reflects very poorly on the incumbent).

Why would he have to worry about budgets? Isn't he going to get rid of the government? I thought that was the Ron Paul philosophy?
Btw, this is going to be an epic failure for the town.

Maybe he can just spend and spend without regard to a budget, like the federal gov't? He can't be any more of a failure than his equivalent in the White House.

Or Raygun, Bush, Clinton and Bush. I actually suspect that the realities of the real world will get to him and his ideal of little to no government will not see the light of day and the budget will actually stay the same(w/inflation factored in) or increase. If he does implement the Paul concept the town will become a wasteland as people move out.

If you did a study of worldwide migrations, those migrating from high-tax/big-govt areas to low-tax/small-govt areas typically outnumber those who strive to move in the opposite direction.
You also make it sound like there are two choices here: "No government" or "Budget stay the same or increase". There's a little bit of space between these two concepts.
Quote:"They cut down trees that were 40 and 50 years old and put in sidewalks nobody needed or wanted,"
This one example creates a conundrum for left-of-center types: The needless "government knows best" spending appeals to their central planning side, but replacing 50-year-old trees for cold useless pavement rubs their environmental side the wrong way. Hmm... decisions, decisions.

The city of Detroit is perhaps the most well-known wasteland in America, its demise starting in the 1960s. The predominant city politics blossoming in this era were tilted heavily toward one political end of the spectrum. I don't need to mention which direction.
Furthermore, I'm not sure you'd want to compare a Texas to our rustbelt states in terms of economic growth and health. Those "wastelands" have been eating our lunch lately.
