Do some looking into Stupak. Yes, he got lots of bad phone calls from outraged people after the vote. What hasn't been widely reported is the phone calls he got "before" he was going to vote FOR the bill. The phone calls were much more numerous and threatening. Stupak told the media they had to take the phone off the hook and that he and his family were worried and scared.

The Tea Party protests are not just being attended by conservatives. I know of three friends who identify as independents and voted for Obama that have attended them. They are dismayed at being painted the way they are. Trust me, they have vowed not to vote for democrats in the next two elections. There are millions more who see what is truly going on.

You see only what you want to see. The democrats who foisted this healthcare bill and are preparing to re-visit illegal immigration soon are the ones who have been practicing bad behavior in the way they rammed this down the throats of us citizens. The President of the country who while campaigning proclaimed himself to be post-partisan has shown he is anything but post-partisan. The Congress who Pelosi proclaimed to be the "most ethical and transparent" in history has shown itself to be anything but that. The people are angry with good reason.

If Bawney Fwank and his cohorts can't stand some critcism, they ought to find another job. Do you think maybe - just MAYBE - the decision of the black democrat caucus and other dems to forgo riding the underground subway to the capitol and walk through a mob of angry protestors was made in the hope of PROVOKING some incident that they could use to discredit the mob as "angry, violent, intolerant and dangerous?" You can almost count on some wacko doing something you can use, whether that guy supports the GOP or is a liberal plant.

Never occurred to you, did it? Instead we focus on "he said, she said" with NO photo or video evidence, despite the hundreds of video cameras there.

Fact is, they passed the law, it was signed into action and there was no reason to "arrest people falsely" who were plotting to kill police officers, or no reason to plant people to be violent and rude. My overall thoughts on this...

The Tea Party is basically toast. In a span of one week, the "Tea Party = Nazi Party" meme has been successfully completed by media.

Any politically driven rally attracts some nuts from the woodwork. Those anti-war rallies in 2003 had some real doozies. The G8 anti-globalization and pro-labor union rallies almost always end in violence and looting.

The Tea Parties (and other anti-gov, right-lean rallies) are no different. They attract their handful of racist goons whose main reason at the rally is not to advance individual liberty and restrained spending, as is the reason for the majority's presence, but instead carry one or two racially-based motivations that clumsily "fit" into the overall raison d'etre of the group. Could be end affirmative action, could be solely based on the President's skin color, whatever. Activist rallies of any political sort is not my thing.

These types of groups are easy prey for those who are hostile to the group's overall message: (1) Wait patiently for groups to assemble, (2) catch a couple racist signs at some gathering or outrageous sloganeering, (3) attack, attack, attack until the entire group is characterized by these numbnuts, (4) victory.

I do applaud those who spoke up while Bush was similarly spending like a drunken sailor, the medicare expansion and approving bailouts. But those who "suddenly" got a voice once the new administration took office is simply showing their Party colors as opposed to sticking to ideological consistency.

This is a grass roots movement of pissed off people, and a name was attached to them, and it stuck. There's some organization at this point, but for the most part this is a pretty good cross section of people with one common bond. They know we're going broke and they want the spending to slow down.

Tea Party toast you say. Okay, fine. These people are still going to show up as long as our president does nothing to spur economic growth, and continues to spend like a drunken sailor. Putting a label, tag, or catchy name on them isn't going to change that.

Remember when Hillary Clinton pointed out that dissent was the

Well, first of all, I said "Tea Parties" specifically, not "people angry at government policies".

Secondly, when I said they're toast, I mean that as something I don't want to see happen. I thought I was pretty clear. You're mostly preaching to the choir in that post.

And lastly, yes, if something is applied a broad-brush label enough times, the perception sticks. In the age of 24/7 cable news networks and the Internet, it isn't so amazing.

Increasingly, Joe Public Sixpack is getting the wrong impression that Tea Parties are wall to wall violent racists, as opposed to a "cross-section of people concerned about spending" with a few fringe types here and there. If the impression is successfully set in motion, the group becomes marginalized as a whole.

It's a shame, but don't shoot the messenger.
