Jeff reports that Fox sports has been told that
Corliss Williamson will be announced as the new coach at UCA. Guess we'll know for certain at 2:30. I hope it's true, and he gets a chance to build a program. It will be a killer if his program surpasses ours in the next few years, and had we acted when we should have, we could have just as easily have hired him instead of UCA. Of course he could be another Sidney, but I think he'll be there for three or four years and have a chance to make something happen. It will really be interesting to see what quality of players he'll bring in immediately. He should be able to get in some doors that might be closed to us, unless Joe Kleine becomes a major player in our recruiting efforts, if he isn't already.

So much for me being a UCA fan. I thought they might be looking to hire a coach or assistant with a pedigree, but they did what UALR did ten or eleven years ago, and going try to live off that hog tit also. Corliss might make a good coach, that's not the question. They had an opportunity to get someone who was more experienced, but being the coach at Arkansas Baptist is not really what I'd think you'd want to see on a resume'. That was some national coaching search, one county over. I guess they didn't have an assistant to move over one seat.

Assuming he is the coach, I think we're being a little hasty in our judgement. Let's see what he does. If he's successful, their AD is a genius. If he's not, then I assume at some point, unlike us, they'll be smart enough to hire someone else. I don't think it's that bad a hire for a new D1 program. But I also thought Sidney would make a great coach for us, so what in the heck do I know, anyway?

Sid did get us some pretty good recruits (too tall, Big Jake come to mind).
He could have made some progress on the win-loss front if he stayed around...or not.

Don't forget Stan Blackmon and Laverne Smith. Those were two pretty good players also. They formed the nucleus of Porter's turnaround.

I wish them the best but I know if I was a fan I would want an assistant from a big 12 school.

There will be a definite honeymoon the first year. After that, he'll have to produce. The interesting thing will be to see if he can recruit some of the better players in Arkansas that we've been unable to recruit. That will really tell us how bad we are if he's able to start getting some of those kids that U of A doesn't want, but end up going out of state instead of coming to UALR. Our coaching staff better make damn sure that doesn't happen. If it does, then there's no more parachute. With Brady, Foley, and now if Corliss starts to make progress, the comparison will be drastic, and someone will be forced to make a decision that probably should have been made now.
