But I'm not surprised that it did.

Lipscomb is terrible in close games. The responsibility for this loss (and the other 13 losses in close games in the last 2 years) lies squarely on the shoulders of one Scott Sanderson.

With his record in close games, a legit D-1 school would have fired him 3 years ago. His assistants prop him up by bringing in good recruits, but his in-game coaching is just profoundly terrible. Today was exactly the kind of game Lipscomb has been really good at losing for the last decade.

And it has to stop.

Whether it does or not will go a long way in showing how serious Lipscomb is about being a D-1 school.

What does every school in the ASun feel the need to try and fire their coach? This is beyond me. You just won the regular season, and you are going to play post season basketball in the NIT. Lipscomb has been a solid competitor in the ASun for the past 4 years, and your program hasn't had anything to be ashamed about off the court.

I don't know anything about Sanderson, but I know he puts a winning product on the court more often than not. I don't want to turn this into a thread defending another team's head coach, but I think the above post is pretty ridiculous.

ALL THAT BEING SAID!!!! GO OWLS!!!! I really felt we could be competitive in this game, and I am glad to see that I was right. Wish I could have been there. Can't believe that in our first year in the tournament we are in the final 4 of the conference tournament. We actually have a shot at this thing...

I kind of have to agree with that. I dont know much about him, but he seems to do a good job. Then again their may be stuff we dont know. I also dont think Bartow for ETSU is that bad.

Anyway i'm excited as well. I'm just glad we were able to make an impact in our first year in the conference tourney.

"You just won the regular season, and you are going to play post season basketball in the NIT. Lipscomb has been a solid competitor in the ASun for the past 4 years, and your program hasn't had anything to be ashamed about off the court."

This is exactly my point.

If "make the NIT once every four years" and "stay off the NCAA's radar and the police blotter" are the standards by which we judge our coaches, then Lipscomb has exactly what it wants.

But this isn't the NAIA. Being a "nice team" with a "nice coach" isn't supposed to be good enough. At the D-1 level, winning and losing matter. At least they should. And if they don't, we're doing a disservice not just to our players, coaches, and fans, but to our opponents as well. If we're going to hold ourselves out there as a legit, D-1 school, our opponents need to know that winning the game matters as much to us as it does to them.

Right now, I'm not convinced it does.

RE: Lipscomb (Official ASUN TOURNAMENT Game Thread) - 03/03/10
Dad - when your program is funded more like an NCAA tournament team - then I think you have the right to complain. But when you are in the bottom 100 funded programs in NCAA basketball, it is hard to rail on a coach when he wins the regular season title, will play in the post season, and seems to do things the right way.

Either way, that is my last post on this, as it is stealing my attention from the real reason for this thread, and that is that Kennesaw is in the Final Four of the ASun! Go Owls!

Oh come on KB...true it's only DAVID lipscomb...but when you have a four way tie for first place...that's not exactly winning it. They're not going to the NIT....they're season is OVER.

Doesn't the regular season champion get an automatic bid to the NIT? I know that was the case the past 4 years in the conference.

It has been changed this year. If there is a tie for first, the team that makes it the farthest in the tournament and doens't win the title gets the bid.

So Lipscomb will be sitting at home.

If this has been changed, nobody has told the NIT website.

Gumbart has said it atleast twice. Even Sanderson admitted there was no NIT chance in the post game press conference.

I guess Lipscomb is back in the NIT hunt now that Belmont and Campbell have lost ... they're hoping Jacksonville wins the tourney, I guess.
