MACON, Ga. – Kennesaw State’s Markeith Cummings was named Second Team All-Atlantic Sun Conference and was a unanimous selection to the All-Freshman Team as the conference office announced its postseason awards on Tuesday afternoon as the tip-off to the 2010 General Shale Brick Atlantic Sun Basketball Championships that begins on Wednesday afternoon.
Cummings, a redshirt freshman, finished his rookie season fourth in the A-Sun in scoring and is the third leading freshman scorer in the nation. Averaging 17.4 points per game, Cummings is the top freshman scorer in the conference and is also among the A-Sun’s best rebounders.
“I’ve always felt like any kind of achievement in a team sport like basketball is always a compliment for the team and the program,” said head coach Tony Ingle. “I’m appreciative of our colleagues who voted Markeith to the all-freshman team and second team all-conference.”
Cummings was also a unanimous pick for the A-Sun All-Freshman Team as he was the only freshman in the conference to be among the top five in scoring and the top 15 in rebounding.
The Birmingham, Ala. native was one of only five players in the conference to win multiple Player of the Week awards this season. In addition, Cummings was one of only two freshmen to win an A-Sun Player of the Week award, joining conference Freshman of the Year, Ian Clark of Belmont.
“I feel like Markeith deserved to be Freshman Player of the Year,” added Ingle. “He played through double-teams all season, he is the third leading freshman scorer in the country and combine that with what he has meant to our team and I believe he was the top freshman in the conference. Hopefully he will use this as a motivation.”
Cummings is just the second Kennesaw State player to earn all-conference honors, joining Ronell Wooten, who was a Second Team pick in 2007. Cummings, along with Kurtis Woods (2009) and Andre Morgan (2006) are the only KSU players to be named to the All-Freshman Team.
