My family lives in Memphis. Everytime I have visited I have enjoyed myslef and have nothing but high praises to sing about my trips. Any city is going to have it's problems, but trust me..there are far worse places to be than Memphis!

did you just read the thread title or what?

it was a commercial appeal article about a Forbes mag ranking, and most people slammed the ranking

There were some pretty miserable remarks in the comment section. As usual.

I LOVE Memphis - born here and live here because I want to! 04-rock

btw I obviously don't live there, but having lived in a lot of other places from bigger cities to small towns and open farm country, I have said many times that any problems Memphis has are not unique.

I love to get back, and probably get there between 8-9 times a year.

it could be worse but compared to Nashville, Atlanta-and the rest of the major cities in the state we are lagging. hell even Jackson ms. is starting to pass us just by bringing in Nissan.

Memphis has so many natural advantages(geography, population, no income tax, etc.) that it is absolutely mind boggling that it is in its current condition. Getting rid of Herenton helps, but Memphis has a long way to go to catch up to other southern cities that are embracing the 21st century. Memphis has some tough decisions over the next decade...Will it go the way of Atlanta, Charlotte, and Nashville or will it become another Detroit?

RE: If You don't like Memphis... easy!! LEAVE
I love Memphis; the only reason I left was because I started law school in another state. I hope to be able to move back once my situation is more stable. I really didn't realize how much I missed the city until I left.

Sure, crime was an issue, but heck, even smaller cities such as Jackson TN have become overridden with violent crime as well. I also thought that Nashville's violent crimes were right behind Memphis last year. I guess my point is that Memphis seems to carry a stigma that other TN cities don't have, even though other cities have similar problems. I'm up in the Cincinnati metro area, which I think is comparable to the mid size cities in the list, and it seems to have some miserableness there, too, but whenever I mention the city of Memphis to some people from here, they tend to look down on the city.

sorry if miserableness isn't a word, btw

Memphis is great. Vermont is different.
Memphis was always good to me and was good to my family.
Vermont is a tough place to live-very inconvenient.
In Memphis, you could get an oil change with just a drive in and hand the keys over. My accountant I had to have an appointment to see.
In Vermont, you have to have an apointment to get your oil changed but your accountant tells you just drop by anytime.

Although I don't actually live in Memphis, I claim it because I'm so close. I've traveled all 50 states and Canada and I will say that Memphis does have its bad qualities and problems, just like most cities its size, BUT the good out-weighs the bad BIG TIME. The uniqueness makes it special. The Q, the music, the airport, the friendly people... all make for a nice combination.

Actually people have left by the thousands. It is called white flight, Some just moved to the burbs and other towns in Shelby County while others moved to Mississippi or Arkansas. The surrounding counties are not called bedroom counties for nothing. I moved back to my hometown after school in Memphis but this was always my intent. I love the University Of Memphis or Memphis State when I was there. I cannot say the same about the city of Memphis, but I wish the city well. There are many good things about Memphis and I go back there often. I will be there saturday. Go Tigers and be careful where you park your car.
