RE: Houston Baptist?
My favorite Lewis Grizzard joke of all time.

The punchline ironically was about somebody screwing a goat 02-13-banana

We are transistioning back to NCAA D1 after about a 20 year period in NAIA. We actually were relatively competitive when we were formerly D1 in the 70s and 80s. (In what is now the A-Sun conference). This is our 3rd year transitioning back. When we made the move back, the "probationary" period was 3 years and after the fact the NCAA tried to change this period to 7 years! We sued the NCAA and "won". The NCAA settled for a period of 4 years. So, after NEXT season, basketball will be fully eligible to compete in postseason play. I honestly believe that we will ultimately end up in the Sun Belt or Southland Conference in however many years. 5? This gives us time to improve facilities and really become ready to move to a more serious conference. And once that happens, our recruiting will immediately improve. I think we could compete on the level of the Sun Belt. Anyways, I like to lurk on boards like this, but now that I was spurred on to post, I hope to join some of the non-HBU conversations.

NCAA Tourney Appearances:

WKU - 21
La La - 9
USA - 8
La-Monroe - 7
MTSU - 6
UNO - 4
UALR - 3
UNT - 2
Ark. State - 1
Fla. Atlantic - 1
Fla. International - 1
HOUSTON BAPTIST - 1
Troy - 1
Denver - 0

I don't think we are actively trying to put you guys down, but you have to admit, right now, you guys are a poor team at best. It's just a fact and that's not a slam, but a point of argument within the conference. Now, if we went around to boards outside of ours belittling your program, that would be an issue. We have to be able to realisically discuss teams good and bad.

Houston Baptist won't be in the Sun Belt* but they were a frequent ASU opponent in 80's during the last stint in Division I.

* = the Sun Belt substantially as it is today. Example Utah State and NMSU wanted to join the WAC from the start and finally got in but there are only 3 WAC members who have been there a decade and all but Hawaii are teams that played in the Big West when they wanted to leave the Big West for the WAC.

As far as giving you a break goes, I can only speak for MT, but as a fan, I don't want HBU on our OOC schedule, unless it's early and at home. And with all due respect, is it a disgrace to play you guys twice in the same season. I really wouldn't want us to play any non conference team twice in a season, but especially not an RPI killer like HBU.

As far as HBU in the Sun Belt, I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you. I don't see us adding any non-football members. You may have one small window of opportunity to get in. When Denver moves to a better fit geographically it will drop us to 11 schools, 10 of which play football. At that point, we may hope/suggest that UALR finds a new home and just go to 10 full members. Or we might add another non football member to get back to 12 in basketball, but stay at 10 in football.
