USC Upstate (Official Game Thread) - 02/06/10
Going for #7 in a row. This is a game we need to win. Can't afford to drop one at home to Upstate. Hopefully our guys come out focused and ready to get above .500 overall. We gave one away at Upstate, otherwise this would be a 9 game winning streak going for 10. Time for us to take some revenge and play our guts out to get a win.

I don't think this will be a cakewalk. This is the perfect scenario for a letdown game, so hopefully our guys will be focused. If we really want to have a chance to be in the top half of the conference, this is a must win game.

Go Owls!

Hopefully there's a good turn-out backing up from the Mercer game, too. Could be quite a few new converts after last night.

I agree with KB on this one. This could be a huge stumbling block for our team, it very much is the stereotypical letdown game after a huge win. It is seen in every sport more or less. It is important that we get out to a good start. The way last game started had me really concerned until Mercer stopped making their shots. As long as we don't start either half out ice cold, I think we win this one.

I am hoping for a good turnout. That crowd was amazing at the Mercer game. I am looking to shut down the big guy, create turnovers and push the issue in transition. A faster tempo favors us in this game. Who all plans on attending?

I'll be there - hope the students show up -- at least half of Thursday's turnout would be good.

I'll be sitting this one out with a leg injury I'm afraid. I'm probable for the last two home games though.

We are really playing poorly...missed layups, bad rotations on defense...just a sloppy game so far for the Owls. We have played flat the whole game...much like we feared. Heramb went down with some sort of knee injury...hopefully not serious, we will see if he returns. We are going to have to play some great basketball to get back in this one.

Lessoned learned tonight....can't come out flat against anyone in conference play. Missed free throws, missed layups, and undisciplined defense by the Owls tonight. This was not the Owls team that we are used to seeing the past 9 games. Hopefully they got it out of their system tonight...now we hit the road to see what we are really made of.

Tough game tonight as a fan. We know, and the players know they can play much better. These last 6 games decide how (if) we enter the conference tournament.

Nothing more to be said, really. A flat, uninspired game against an inferior opponent. Getting beaten by these guys twice is awful. Hopefully we can pull off an upset or two in the coming games to try to not only clinch a tourney berth but try to get a mid-seed.

Don't worry about the tourney KB... you would have to lose out and have Stetson win out. (jinx?) lol can't jinx that one it's too ridiculous. Stetson has 3 total wins. Now they need 5 straight.

anyone else have a feeling we would lose tonight?

It was just horrible. I went to the game and you could tell in warmups that they were being over confident. We havent played that bad since the very beginning of the season. What a waste. If we can beat etsu though that would make up for it.

Also one more thing, the lack of boxing out really hurt us big time. Ladaris especially.

I still can't get over we lost to this bad team twice. This is the type of stuff that just kills me. I've been out of school for years now and haven't been more interested than I was for that Mercer game and now it's just, "well maybe we can upset someone in the conference tournament".

I feel your pain man. I was at the Upstate game and the whole time i'm thinking "we should just be killing this team". It was obvious Upstate wasnt good. We had the size advantage overall, speed advantage, athletic advantage, and we were a much deeper team. Upstate wasnt even doing anything out of the ordinary.

We should of been pressing them the entire game. Upstate looked dead near the end of the game. A lot of heavy breathing and flat feet on defense. We made a ton of mental mistakes, and we missed a ton of free throws. We handed them the game. And what made it worse was it was the second time we did that with them. You could tell during warmups our guys had that look on their face that all they had to do was showup and they would win. Oh well, its over. If they beat ETSU it makes up for it big time.

Seems like they get a little bit cocky going up against teams lower on the ladder. Can't really take that attitude when your talent isn't THAT much superior, though.

Never as good as it looks, nor as bad as it seems. This is something I've repeated countless times and has even more weight when you only have one senior that gets serious minutes.

Are we as good as the team that shot lights out and beat Lipscomb? The team that swept Mercer?

Are we as bad as the team that was embarassed by Jacksonville and ETSU? Got swept by USC Upstate?

The answer is "yes" to each question. If we're hot enough we have the ability to beat anyone in conference. If we're cold enough we lack the ability to beat anyone in the conference. This comes with a team as young as ours. Our win streak was just that.. a streak. We didn't grow into a powerhouse overnight. We still lack talent, consistency, and composure to compete on an everyday basis with the best in the league. But we have reached a point where we do have the ability to win these games wihtout it being an "upset". We're making strides but lets keep things in perspective. Its never as good as it looks, or as bad as it seems.

Corn, I honestly believe that is the best analysis of this team I have ever read. Well done. Cannot agree more.
