Nature Coast running back Tevin Drake signed a letter of intent with Western Michigan on Wednesday morning. Drake had orally committed to the school Monday night, but kept it quiet in case other suitors came calling.
"I have a lot of thoughts running through my head right now," Drake said just after signing. "I'm feeling real good right now."
Drake's teammate Braddie Ellison also signed a letter of intent with North Carolina A&T.
Drake's recruiting process had its highs and lows. He had an offer from Miami last summer, which was rescinded once the Hurricanes filled their running back needs. He later turned down an invitation for an official visit to Minnesota and just last week Marshall pulled a scholarship offer after it had filled its commitment allotment.
Helping to drum up interest was volunteer assistant Robert Kazmier. He played a key role in filling the gap during two head coaching changes in less than a year.
Drake finished as the North Suncoast's second-leading rusher of all time with almost 5,000 yards. Drake will join Hudson quarterback Zack Wynn at Western Michigan.
"We went to the (North-South) all star game together," Drake said. "He wanted me to go there from the jump. He asked me last night who I was signing with, but I didn't tell him. ...I'm speechless right now. I'm just happy."
Drake said he will enroll at Western Michigan in June, where he expects to be a "major impact for them."
