Ball State signs IU to home and away games
Ball State will open its 2011 football season at home against Indiana. The Cards will play at IU in 2012. I believe this is the first time Ball State has had a straight one for one deal with a BCS opponent.

Then also Ball State has a straight 1 for 1 deal with ISU coming up in the 2014/2015 time frame....first time 1 for 1 with FCS.

Illinios State could be moving up to the MAC by that point, you don't know.

I thought MAC rules forbade that.

Anyway, don't be surprised if IU tries to buy out their game.

Why would IU do that? They have played at Ball State before. And when Ball State last played at IU in 2008, it was the 2nd biggest attendance IU had that year.

To be honest, I doubt IU has the money to buy out this game so you should be safe.

You and Lurker are kinda missing the point.

1. They play the home game vs BSU, then buy out the away game.

2. They do that b/c they get an offer for more than double the cost of the BSU game. i.e. BSU contracts for a $300K buyout for the game where they offered $400K to play. Tenn offers $900K. IU buys out the BSU game, and still nets $200K more.

Impressive... you got the home game upfront... I wouldn't worry about it.

=>Read the first post again. IU plays at BSU first. Thus, IU cannot first play in Bloomington then buy out the road game.

My mistake. I misread that.

I bet you they do with the 20 million a year windfall TV distribution from Big Ten Network/ESPN.

IU just spent gobs of money upgrading their stadium and my understanding is that they don't have a whole lot of money to throw around. IU has never really had much money to spend freely on football, in fact, when they were searching for a head coachh (and hired Hoeppner) a member of the search committee said they were looking for a good football coach who they could get for cheap - and that is almost an exact quote.

IU backed out of its game with CMU in Mt. Pleasant in 2010, so who knows? They may back out of the BSU game at your stadium too.

Probably depends on if BSU has a good 2010 season or not and if the IU administration thinks they can win or not at another MAC team's home stadium...

Turns out the game at Ball State is the first of a 2-for-1. The final game will be later in the decade. They're not going to buy their way out of the first game of the series.

If IU wants to play one of their two homes games in the series in Indy, fine. But there is no way possible Ball State gives up their home game for a game in Indy. That will mark just the fourth home game against a BCS school, if I recall correctly (Missouri, Boston College, and IU).

I think that would be cool to play in Lucas Oil. But, Ball State isn't going to give up a home game and IU won't either after putting a lot of money into their place.

If you can sell twice as many tickets at three times the price, you might be better off playing your home game in Indianapolis. I haven't seen the final numbers for our "home" game with OSU, but it is over 4 million dollars for sure.
