I clicked. It was informative.
I have kaspersky and it was on the list!
McAfee isn't, which surprised me.

RE: Anti-Virus 2010 scam
Start with Microsoft Security Essentials. Nobody knows better what does and doesn't belong than Microsoft.
Now if you find SE makes your computer HIDEOUSLY slow (nobody knows better how to make a computer crawl than Microsoft), I'd then opt for Avast!.
If you are really security conscious and/or paranoid ... then I'd say stop wading in the kiddie pool and use Linux.

Just hooked the hard drive again and still would not boot up so I had to take it down to the basics and reinstall all the programs.
Right now trying to install McAfee and it is having issues which tells me the virus must still be blocking the installtion somehow.
My wife is wearing me down with the threat of spending big dollars on a MAC. Got to get it up and running by Fri or else.
I had a "boot sector virus" about a month ago. Computer wouldn't start, even in safe mode, without the virus controlling everything. My IT guy pulled the hard drive and was able to do a system restore from another computer after removing the virus with some software designed to combat boot sector viruses. He was able to save all my documents before doing the system restore.
Prior to that problem I was always able to troubleshoot my own computer issues. The boot sector viruses are BAD.
I am told the popular anti-viruses (Norton, McAfee) are not the best, because they too are designed to infiltrate, and thus compromise, your security system. The free services, like Avast and AVG, don't do that. They protect without creating security flaws.

The boot sector is a secondary characteristic of the virus. It actually is hidden in a fake storage device driver, so it literally sits between the OS and all files on the system. Which of course means it can remain invisible to almost all A/V once it is in. Things I found out when cleaning it out: Avast did detect it, but couldn't remove it. AVG saw nothing. Kaspersky makes a free tool to completely remove it, but you'll end up likely having to fish for random registry entries to make your computer stop misbehaving.
Shame on whoever did a system restore if that's what they really did. The FIRST thing any serious virus does is infect your system restore points so you end up reinstalling it. System restore is so useless, I disable it on computers I work on and tell people to buy an external HD or flash drive and keep their important stuff backed up on it.

Your level of computer knowledge, Swagger, is leagues beyond mine, and I certainly will defer. All I know is that the problem I had was real bad, but now its fixed. The problem and solution were explained to me, but many of the details were likely lost on me due to language barrier; namely, me not understanding computerese.
Actually, it never dawned on me that I could have turned to my buddies on the Bronco board for at least an advise starting point.

RE: Anti-Virus 2010 scam
Any type of anti virus is always going to try as much as the software can remove all type of viruses either in hard disk or in different drives. But some anti virus can't remove virus fully so it's better to choose a better anti virus which can speed up your compute and make free from virus.
