O/T 2010 in BCS and non-AQ BCS
Occassionally we have a thread abou the BCS situation, how it is, how it was, and what might happen in the future.

Well, 2010 could be even better then '09.

For those who have missed it, Boise returns 23 of 24 starters from an unbeaten team.

They will play Va. Tech at FedEx in the Washington 'burbs (I'll try to make that game) and host OSU (O=Oregon, not Ohio, but did anyone expect Ohio State to go to Boise 05-stirthepot).

ON PAPER, Boise might be the pre-seaon favorite to go the the NC game along with Alabama which also returns tons of starters.

Incredible but very, very possible. 04-cheers

Today's Wash Post had a nice article on Boise '10.

The non-AQ teams have come a LONG ways in this past decade.

I hope that Boise doesn't get screwed in the preseason (or later) polls, otherwise it can be difficult to rise to the top.

In addition to the Ducks and the Hokies, Boise will also have to get past the Rockets next year; however, as the game is in Boise I imagine that they will be up to the task 03-wink

Wash Post wrote they expect Boise to be pre-season top 5 and eliminate the problem of having to climb great distances to get into the top 5 teams.

Quote from Kyle Whelliston of the MidMajority.com:

Quote:American-Style Football, at the college level, is like cocaine. Not "crack," I'm talking about the real stuff. There are quick, short highs that make you feel big. But it's expensive, the drug of the rich. Anyone else who gets hooked ends up strung out, addicted, and in a worse place than where they started out from. All for the brief illusion of being big.

This year Boise started out #14 preseason after losing its bowl game against TCU in 2008, finishing #11 in the AP Poll.

I would have to think Boise will start in the top 10 and so probably will Virginia Tech. If Boise can beat VT early that will send a message they belong in the national title race.

TCU finishes #6 this season after finishing #7 in 2008.....

2008 Final Polls
Utah #2 (AP)
TCU #7 (AP)
Boise State #11 (AP)
BYU #21 (ESPN/USA)

2009 Final Polls
Boise State #4 (AP)
TCU #6 (AP)
BYU #12 (AP)
Utah #18 (AP)

Boise should be receiving the MWC invite soon.

agree, K.C.

It is VERY possible that if the numb nuts who vote can read what I can read in the Wash. Post, that Boise will return 23 of 24 starters from an undefeated team, then they will vote Boise probably #4 or 5 going into '10.

And as you indicate, a win over Va Tech in Landover, Md. would solidify as a top 5 team, maybe as high as say #3,

I'd tweak that to only say 2 or 3 non-AQ teams have come a long ways in this past decade.

There was a glass celling in place from the onset of the BCS that almost prohibited a non-AQ from being ranked in the top 10. Utah's undefeated season in 2004 broke down that barrier.

One barrier that has yet to drop, on top of a shot at the national title game is ranking a non-AQ top 10 in the preseason.

Highest non-AQ by year:

2002 #17 Lousiville (AP)
2003 #23 Colorado State (AP)
2004 #20 Utah (AP)
2005 #18 Boise State (AP)
2006 #21 TCU (ESPN/USA)
2007 #22 TCU (AP)
2008 #16 BYU (AP)
2009 #14 Boise State (AP)

The talk right now is that Boise State may enter the season at #3 with TCU also starting in the top 10.

As we watched this year though, would Boise still face the prospect of being leap frogged by SEC schools because of conference strength?

In 2009, by the 5th poll Boise State was already ranked #5 in the country with a 4-0 start. They finish 14-0 and end up #4. How does it make any sense they're anything less than #2?
