RE: A big announcement, but probably not THE big announcement
Here's what my little birdies have told me about this-
A- On the immediate front, it means that there will be less budget for the stations. So while radio cuts costs now, they will REALLY cut costs.
Give you an example. Clear Channel owns a lot of stations in Wheeling, which is home to WWVA-AM, a legendary 50,000 watt AM station.
They've been trying to sell their smaller market stations. What they did in Wheeling was get rid of their local afternoon host for Sean Hannity and sell off the legendary Capitol Theatre, which is literally one of the most historic music venues in the USA. They also sell the evenings to religious programming.
B- There's some talk that Citadel might try to sell the Johnson City cluster. If that were to happen it is totally unpredictable. Could some of the employees get together and buy a station themself? Would Bristol and/or Kingsport try to buy some of the stations, or would a smaller programmer in the market try to buy them for the sake of trying to get bigger?
Hell, I might be PMing the various people on this board to buy WXSM and WQUT.
