The University of North Texas will celebrate the construction of its $78 million football stadium Saturday with a groundbreaking ceremony that is expected to include former professional football standout and UNT alumnus “Mean Joe” Greene, a four-time Super Bowl champion. The stadium, being designed by the firm that designed Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, will have space for about 30,000 fans. Plans call for 21 luxury suites, an indoor-outdoor club level with food and beverage service, and bowl seating to improve sight lines. It will also have space for meetings and receptions, a giant video screen, a state-of-the-art sound system and plenty of space for tailgating. – Star-Telegram

I think People who go on this board are interested in what other schools are doing. Do you only want to read about the same thing talked about a thousand times. I hope I unconfused you, didn't know this was such a deep subject

RE: North Texas Stadium
This S&N thread entertains many topics which may or may not be relevant to NIU in the eyes of some.

I found the videos to contain what seemed to me a mixed message. Texas state law forbids use of tax revenues to finance athletics yet the AD introduced state legislator and thanked her for her support and stadium could not have been possible without persons on stage in attendance for groundbreaking ceremony . ??????

I see the relevance to NIU in that many Huskie fans here have posted dreams & complaints re: need to update Huskie Stadium. We see above but one example of what another mid major has set out to achieve in upgrading football facility. It serves as one benchmark for NIU to match the amenities found in UNT's new stadium when old stadium not much older than Huskie stadium.

I can answer this, as I was part of the SGA to pass the athletic fee.

Texas state law states athletics cannot be funded by taxes or student paid tuition. Any student funding must be in the form of a fee.

UNT never had an athletics fee - funding came from the student services fee. Students voted for a new dedicated athletics fee starting at $10/hr.

State law says any new student fee must be approved by a student vote, the state legislature, signed by the governor, and approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Basically, we had to get a lot of approval, and the state legislator at the groundbreaking was a key player in getting legislature approval.
