Seriously? I dont think the majority of ND recruits are different than those at any other BCS school. They wouldn't get into ND without football. ND isn't exactly Harvard football on steroids...

Here is another way of putting it; the best high school football is played at schools with resources.....the kids from those schools grew up with better resources, academic or otherwise.

Those kind of kids on a local to even national basis don't want to go to inner city Cincinnati to play football.

Its kind of like Penn State and Temple. Penn State attracts a different type of athelete than Temple because of its college town appeal.

Columbus is now the size of Cincinnati but that wasn't the case when OSU got rolling. When OSU got its football program rolling in the 1920's Columbus was like a Madison, WI, good sized but not a major city. The economy in Ohio has shifted toward service in the last 30 years hence Columbus has built itself up with its centralized location for distribution centers.

Its an honor for anyone to play at Ohio State. It will never be like that for the Big East schools.

Western Michigan gets a shot at Notre Dame in 2010, don't be so sure they would turn down a MAC bowl if that's all they could get.

Keeping the program winning will get them started higher in the rankings to start the season.

No reason to be greedy on money from ND when you are already getting enough over one million a year from Cincy. His family's future is financially secure now. Cincy has not experienced success like this, but they were not in a BCS conference before either.

UC is playing out of their minds this year, might finish undefeated with wins against 3 top 25 teams (assuming they beat Pitt) and still will not be given a shot at the National title. If this was ND they would at least be in the conversation. And I disagree with the financial argument, 2-3 mil more per year is HUGE. If he is offered ND he is gone.

Last year 6-6 Notre Dame should have played in the Motor City Bowl but opted out for Hawaii which has a lot of tradition as a destination.

Medicore Notre Dame is running out of places to hide. The Hawaii bowl is under contract between CUSA & WAC this year. This year the at-large openings are looking slim...possibly only Detroit, Mobile, and Boise. Given the 3 options Detroit sounds the most appealing, I would think.

To be honest, the recruiting appeal of UC is fairly limited.

They are mostly targeting non-qualifier kids from city leagues.

ND, OTOH is getting academic athletes. Who wouldn't want to play for ND if they started winning a few BCS games. To say you've played for Notre Dame is like saying you played for the Dallas Cowboys.

Two things

1) The Big East does not allow partial qualifiers as of a couple years ago.

2) If UC was bringing in crap students, they wouldn't have the best graduation rate of the top 10 BCS schools.

I can tell you dont follow recruiting much, because this post is completely incorrect. The Philly area is a big recruiting area for Penn State. Temple and Penn State recruit some of the same players, but obviously, if PSU offers, they dont pick Temple.

I would suspect the Philly high schools those kids come from at Penn State are mainly large suburban.

That is the way it is with Ohio State in Ohio but with UC its city league players.

1) Graduation rates don't mean nothing because any program can set up an academic support system that gets kids through college.

2) You can still recruit partial qualifiers, you just can't play them if they don't qualify. Qualifiers are a joke anyway, all it takes is enough coaching on the SAT.

3) There is no way UC is bringing in a better student than Miami Ohio. Trust me the character of those teams are totally different.

Bruce Feldman of ESPN has NIU playing Notre Dame in the Pizza Pizza Bowl. Now there's one of the few bowl matchup's we can win!! 02-13-banana

That would be so much fun. 03-cloud9

They recruit suburban and urban kids.

Ken Hoffman weighs in...

He implies a 6 - 6 ND could be invited.

Unfortunately, if a 7-5 Sun Belt team is still lurking out there and not yet assigned a bowl, it would -- by rule -- have to be extended the invitation before a 6-6 Notre Dame. ND is still a pipe dream for the LC or GMAC Bowls

I would guess a 6-6 ND would turn down the "opportunity" to match up with the MAC champ in Detroit.

Hey, how about changing our new slogan from "MAC: The New Mark of Excellence", to "MAC: The Pariah of College Football"?

Notre Dame went to Hawaii because ESPN upped the juice to get them to go. ESPN owns the game and couldn't find a single at-large team willing to go due to the size of the financial loss they would incur.

If Notre Dame is firing Weis they may forego a bowl to concentrate on the coach search.

Must have been rough:

ESPN: "Please, please go to Hawaii and play in a bowl game."

ND: "Well, okay."

I also remember them saying that Weiss got some recruiting of Hawaii out of it too though.
