How bad is WKU, historically speaking? dahbeed said in another thread that they get a free pass in their first season, which got me wondering, what did every current Sun Belt school do in their first season in the FBS.

MT 8-3(2001) avg points for 37.1 avg points against 26
Troy 7-5(2004)avg points for 26 avg points against 18.2
FIU 5-6(2005) avg points for 23.4 avg points against 29.4
ULL 3-8(1978) avg points for 11.5 avg points against 20.8
ULM 3-8(1994) avg points for 22 avg points against 34.9
UNT 2-9(1995) avg points for 18.2 avg points against 38.5
ASU 2-9(1992) avg points for 10.7 avg points against 36.5
FAU 2-9(2005) avg points for 13.5 avg points against 30.8

Currently WKU is 0-7 averaing 16.4 for and 41.9 against

The worst offense in Sun Belt history was FIU 06 scoring 9.6 a game
The worst defense in Sun Belt hitory was UNT 08 allowing 47.6 a game

So if they lose out to go 0-12 where will there season rank in the history of the Sun Belt among current members?

Well it would be just the second winless season in Sun Belt history to go along with FIU 06. They'd also be at 20 consecutive losses closing in on FIU's mark of 23, although all 23 of FIU's came as a full FBS member whereas 8 of WKU's came as a transitionary team.

Currently WKU's average point margin is -25.5

The worst average point margin in Sun Belt history was 08 UNT at -27.6
currently the second worst was FIU 07 at -24. So WKU is currently on pace for the second worst point margin in league history. However, both the aforementioned teams won a game. FIU's winless team of 06 had an average point margin of 16.5.

If WKU loses out and finishes with the 2nd worst point margin in league history, are they the worst team in conference history? Of course the 08 UNT squad with the worst point margin only beat the transitionary 08 WKU squad.

And already knowing what your response is going to be dahbeed... "all we have to do to achieve 'ELITE' 1a status is go 43-58."

If you go 0-12 this year, averaging 6-6 over the next 7 seasons would get you to 42-54. I doubt you go 6-6 next year, so that number is going to just get harder and harder to reach.

C'mon guys, this thread should really be moved to the Smack board. I know some here probably think WKU has it coming for some of their 'holier than thou' basketball rhetoric, but seriously.

I think it's time to stop piling on.

I'm not flaming, but how do you think South Alabama would do against Western? Our competition against JC and Prep Schools can't compare to WKY's opponents but many feel South is way ahead of schedule. Can't see the 3 remaining teams on our schedule beating us. Huntington College is the only NCAA Div. III on the schedule. Our defense is very good and our running game is awesome. The passing game, however, needs some improvements for sure, although the receivers aren't bad at all. Smack away.

You have to consider one thing - as bad as we are right now, your teams beating us does nothing for your overall RPI but lower it. So the sooner we get better and winning games the better the entire conference looks. Sorry we are such a dark could right now but that gives us nowhere to go but up right?

It would not be close. We are "bad" but not that bad. I mean we scored the 3rd most on Navy this year and fumbled on the one or would've been 7 more. We were within 8 of South Florida in the 4th quarter and lost to ULL by only 8 points. Its a perception thing. I have not seen USA play but would guess would be like 63 to 14 or worse. We beat West Virginia Tech in 2007, a Division II team, by 87-0.

I would have to agree, it wouldn't. I think it wouldn't be closer than 4 TDs, Western.

You know that would not be that bad though for USA and it is not a knock on their team at all. I think they are way ahead of were they should be and hope they continue on the same path with the football.

FWIW, I was listening to our sports radio station a couple of weeks ago and some coach/former coach was asked that very question (sorry, I never caught his name -- was out running "honey do's") and he theorized South Alabama would probably hang even with WKU until the 3rd or maybe even the 4th QTR with WKU pulling away at that point due to better depth talent.

You've got to remember: USA has 50 D-IA scholarship players -- players of whom many were recruited by D-IA schools so they're definitely more talented than many folks would assume at first glance. Do I think they'd beat WKU? Naw, that's a ridiculous question really. Do I think it would be a bit more respectable of a game than some others on this board? Yep. Probably 2 or 3 TD's by the end of the game.

Then again, we'll never know but it is fun to speculate. As for right now though, to WKU Football and its fans: :ncaabbs:

I'm all for wku getting better in football. After all, that can't be too hard.

we dream of the muts getting better in hoops too. after all, that can't be too hard.....but then i look at the end of the bench and see kermit and realize maybe it is too hard.

I'm all for wku getting better in football. After all, that can't be too hard.

Our men's hoops may not be as good as yours, but in relative terms, we're much more competitive in MBB than you are in football. We typically finish in the top half of our division, not among the worst in the country.
