Pike had surgery?
Well it appears they do know what's wrong and have done a "procedure" (sounds like some sort of minimally invasive procedure with respect to the plate). Still saying he may play Saturday. Here's the link:
http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20091...l+Thursday

Well at least its good news in that it doesn't sound like a long term stint on the sidelines but I think the "he may play on saturday" does look like a bit of a smokescreen in light of him having a surgery (no matter how simple it was) today.

RE: Pike had surgery?
ESPN just reported on Sports Center that he is supposed to practice on Thursday even with the procedure he had today.

I still hope that he won't play and that we can win with one of the other two. Maybe keep Pike on the sideline in case we get in trouble. I would like to see him healing that arm for Uconn and the rest.

I agree. UofL and Syracuse, despite their records, will not be easy games. But I am confident Kelly will be able to develop a game plan for either Collaros or Anderson that will get UC those 2 wins while Pike rests/rehabs.

RE: Pike had surgery?
Dennis Janson is proud of himself and his 'sources' -

CINCINNATI -- University of Cincinnati Head Football Coach Brian Kelly confirmed Tuesday during his weekly news conference that starting quarterback Tony Pike had surgery earlier in the day to repair a broken left arm.

That affirms our report first aired Saturday night that the Reading High School grad and the most productive QB in the Big East through six games suffered an injury similar to the one that sidelined him for two games last season.

Pike was falling backward after being sacked Thursday night late in the second quarter at South Florida and extended both arms back to break his fall. His left arm took the brunt of the impact, fracturing his arm above the plate that was inserted last October.

Doctors Angelo Colosimo and Peter Stern, a hand specialist, collaborated on the procedure according to Kelly, which was decided upon late Monday night. Our sources indicated, as reflected by our earlier reports, that surgery was likely well before that but was delayed until Tuesday.

Kelly said the next 48 hours are crucial to whether or not Pike will be able to play Saturday against Louisville. The amount of swelling, his pain tolerance, and ability to defend himself and handle the ball will largely determine his availability we're told. Our sources indicate that a much longer recovery window is likely and that Pike playing by the UConn game November 7, is a more realistic timetable.

The good thing is Pike's backup, Zach Collaros, knows the offense and did a good job filling in last week at South Florida. Collaros led the Bearcats on three scoring drives in the second half, accounting for two touchdowns and 132 yards rushing.

The Bearcats will try and improve to 7-0 when they host the Cardinals this Saturday at Nippert at 3:30 p.m.

What the heck - one more from ESPN. I guess the question is is it broken or not? I guess it does not matter.

Pike uncertain for Louisville gameComment Email Print Share By Brian Bennett

Cincinnati quarterback Tony Pike underwent a procedure Tuesday morning to repair the plate in his left arm, and his status for Saturday's game against Louisville is up in the air, school officials said.

The senior hurt his left wrist and forearm in last Thursday's win at South Florida. It is the same arm in which he had a plate and six screws inserted last year after breaking it. Last week's injury caused the plate to shift inside his arm.

Pike returned to practice on Monday wearing a cast on the left arm. He will not practice Tuesday or Wednesday, but the fifth-ranked Bearcats hope he can return to the practice field Thursday. His availability for Saturday will depend on the amount of swelling in his arm and whether he's able to take snaps out of the shotgun.

If Pike can't play, Bearcats coach Brian Kelly will choose between sophomores Zach Collaros and Chazz Anderson to start in his place.

RE: Pike had surgery?
There is no way Kelly is going to play him in this game IMHO. It's all a smokescreen to make Louisville do extra work to prepare for two different types of quarterbacks. That's why we keep seeing conflicting reports. A great move by BK, but no one on here should be surprised on Saturday when Tony isn't dressed.

I agree that his chances of playing are slim and why risk it? I think you go with Collaros and best case scenario try to get Pike ready in case they absolutely have to have him (a disasterous half for the UC offense or some other scenario where the game is on the line and we need him).

RE: Pike had surgery?
Does preparing for 2 QB's really change all that much? We'll run the same pass plays with any of the 3 QB's, but we may run less of them if Pike is out. We'll run more with the other 2. What exactly will the opposing defense do differently? Change from a 3-4 to a 4-3 if Pike is out?

Probably the person most affected would be the UofL safety. Maybe he plays a little deeper with Pike, maybe crowds the line with Zach or Chazz. Other than that?

Mauk was more bionic than Pike.
