RE: Tennesse Titans are 0-4 this season
Edit: This started short btw, now it's not lol. Anyways, here is my "analysis"
The Titans should really be concerned right now. They have no quarterback (sound familiar?), other than the starters the secondary is horrible, the special teams are atrocious (sound familiar?), their head coach is too stubborn to make changes where changes need to be made (sound familiar?) , and some of the personnel moves the front office makes are beyond me (also sounds familiar, right?)
I said earlier this year, during one of the pre-season games I think (I can't find the thread anymore), that I saw one thing that really, truly concerned me about the upcoming season and that was the lack of depth on the defensive side of the ball. Finnegan and Harper went down early, thus forcing Fisher to play a couple of rookies that aren't ready for the NFL yet. The results have terrible. I think our 'D' line is doing a good job shutting down the run. The linebackers core seems likes it's doing bad because of the lack of production on the stat sheet but they aren't. We are getting burned deep as a result of half our starters in the secondary succumbing to injuries early in the season.
Now, to the offense we go. Pathetic. I do believe Fisher and Dinger have Friday lunch with Tommy and Clay Helton every week. It would explain why the offensive play calling is so similar. Titan's drives usually go somewhat like this. CJ run up the middle, gain of 2. CJ run up the middle, gain of 1, bubble screen to a receiver for a loss or another short gain. Or, if we are really lucky, big loss on 2nd down making it 3rd and long and we just run the ball to get out of the possession. Quick 3 and out, punt it away. With that kind of offense, it's really unfair to blame the defense. They are on the field way too often. Our offensive line is having some injury problems as well but the backups are holding up much better than those on the defensive end. When Kerry Collins does throw a forward pass, it's usually to the other team, except in the rare case when he throws one to a fan in the upper deck because he's being "pressured" by a defender 9 yards away from him. Even in that case, I'd still bet that he couldn't hit anyone wearing a Titans jersey. When he is "on" it seems like the receivers have problems receiving. They are so surprised the ball got to them, they forget to catch it. That or they just suck and can't catch. Gage, good, not great. Washington, same. Kenny Britt, IMO has all the tools to become a #1 receiver in the league and needs to be getting snaps as the #1 receiver.
On to special teams. Well, nothing needs to be said about that. Just sign someone who can field a damn punt.
That brings us to coaching strategies and front office decisions. Coaching wise, they are WAY too conservative. We have 2 big playmakers on offense right now that go by the names of Chris Johnson and Nate Washington. Both need space to operate. Chris Johnson needs outside runs, pitches, screens, etc. Instead he gets halfback dives up the middle. Nate Washington needs to be sprinting downfield. He has blazing speed also. Instead, he gets 5 yard curls and slants. With all the injuries, the defense needs to change its philosophy. Probably should be running a 3-4. Now for the front office decisions. Jeff Fisher has a man crush on Kerry Collins, similar to that of Tommy Wests crush on Arkelon Hall. They need to step up now and put Vince Young in the game. I believe he is in a contract year, let him prove his worth. If he fails, then you let him walk and draft a quarterback in the upcoming draft, it's not like you have anything to lose at this point. But I have a feeling he will see limited PT this year and they will simply let him walk without ever giving him an opportunity to prove that he should be the franchise quarterback. If they do put him in, it wont be next week or the week after, it will be after the bye week when we are 0-6 coming off 2 straight blowout losses to Indy and New England. We have a few more players I have a feeling that the FO will let go at the end of the year. Lendale White, who I believe is VERY effective when used properly. The man is averaging like 5ypc inside the redzone. That's tough. Keith Bulluck is another big name they probably won't attempt to re-sign.
