inside look at the basketball program
just stumbled upon a blog that former walk-on branden miller is doing. it looks like a weekly thing, and there are already 3 entries. although the writing isn't the best, it shows a side of the program most don't get to see or hear about

some highlights:

Quote:Then a couple days after a high school game where I played pretty well scoring 26 points and 16 of them coming in the 4th quarter, my high school coach, Jim Prugh, called me into his classroom where he said how a coach, Andy Assaley (now at Kansas State) from the University of Cincinnati sent him an email saying that if I wanted to be a walk-on at UC that they would save a spot for me.

Quote:Then I went to go work out with the strength coach, Scott Greenawalt (now at Kansas State). It was the hardest workout involving no running that I have ever been through... When I finally got to the leg press, that was the breaking point. I could not help it but I just had to throw up.

Quote:Now, Andy Kennedy said in the meeting that he does not get pleasure from seeing people throw up like it has always been at UC since he has been there. He said he would prefer that Scott just get us in shape by gradually getting us there as opposed to just throwing us in the fire. It was still very hard I must say, but not many of us were throwing up during workouts.

Quote:Coach Kennedy put in a policy where the coaches were going to keep everyone’s individual records for open gym. The players with losing records would have to run a “22” sprint for every game they were under .500. A “22” is where you have to run down and back twice within 22 seconds.

Quote:This finisher was the one where we would have to carry 50 pound sandbags up two floors. We had to carry three of them. It was timed and I did really well with it and everyone in my group was impressed. I ended up finishing 2nd by one second to Eric Hicks who wasn’t about to let a freshman walk-on beat him in something...He was clearly the team leader mainly because everyone was scared of him.

kind of a long post, i know, but there's more to read here: http://shiningstarsports.blogspot.com/
