Bearcats Full of Themselves
The Morning Line, 9/23
Posted 9/23/2009 7:14 AM EDT on Cincinnati.com
Wow, are the Bearcats getting a little full of themselves?

Someone asked Isaiah Pead Tuesday if UC were the best quasi-amateur football team in the state. From the AP:

“Hey, if we ever have to strap it on with them, we're going to win,” Pead said, not even flinching when the question was raised.

“I think as long as you're in the state of Ohio and you're not looked at as an equal or partner, you're going to play with a chip on your shoulder,” Brian Kelly said Tuesday. “And I'm not saying we should be looked at as an equal or a partner. But our players sense and feel that every day by who they talk to and who they see at the mall and, 'Did you see the Ohio State-USC game?' 'Yeah, did you see our game?'

“So they're going to carry that (chip), and I'm certainly not going to tell them to change the way they think because as a coach, I kind of like that role that we have.”

Buckeyes? Or Bearcats?

“I liked the situation they have here,” the sophomore running back said. “They were an up-and-coming team and I love the coaches. The coaches were nice, whereas the OSU coaches were, 'If you come here, you come here. If you don't, then that's fine, we'll get the next guy.' I felt these coaches, they cared about you.”

That might be true. And it's fun -- in an almost bizarre, through-the-looking-glass-backward way -- to see UC getting fresh with the boys from up north. But c'mon. The Bearcats are having a great run. Ohio State has a great program. If BK left tomorrow, UC football would swan-dive the day after. If Tressel left, OSU would keep on keeping on. The only place in Cincinnati where the program is bigger than the coach is Xavier.

Now, if BK stays and succeeds another 5 years, maybe the story changes and UC becomes less of a little bro. For now, it's the UC Kellys.

I am really tired of the UC-OSU comparisons.

Isaiah Pead is talking a little too much.

Who pooped in Paul Daugherty's wheaties this morning? Yesterday he was allowing that UC could play for the national title. Today he thinks they are full of themselves.

The original Pead quote came from the USA Today story, the same reporter who stated Pead picked UC over OSU. We don't know what was taken out of context but it is hardly "full of themselves".

I don't think they are "full of themselves"....imo but I do hope they don't start reading all this press and get soft....hopefully BK keeps them focused.

RE: Bearcats Full of Themselves
I'm confused as to why they put the 'full of themselves' line in the. It doesn't make any sense. If an OSU player made the same comment- nobody would question it. Chad Johnson is full of himself. We are no where near that. I think we are a pretty humble team so far and I hope it stays that way. And as much as I would enjoy an OSU/UC match up this year - I, too, am getting sick of hearing about it. Nearly every radio station I listened to this morning going into work talked about UC which was awesome but 2 of them were having callers call in and debate OSU/UC. It's annoying. Let's focus on the task at hand.

Yeah all of the UC-OSU comparisons are coming from the press. We don't play OSU this year so they don't concern me. I saw the Enquirer was running a poll on the subject last night, so I guess this means UC won't stop talking about OSU. I bet Kelly is game planning for the Ohio State game right now, in fact!

RE: Bearcats Full of Themselves
I agree with the annoying factor of it all but taking a step back....the fact we are at a place that it's become a discussion point is amazing to me and I like the press....it can't hurt recruiting either. It doesn't matter if we are or aren't better than O$U right now. The point is, it's a "thought" and as they say in the business world, there is no such thing as "bad publicity"......as long as the players aren't distracted by this (and the talk of nc game, Pike heisman, etc.) then we're fine here....

and ya gotta know it's pissing off some O$U snobs....which is priceless

Hack journalism at its finest. BFD if Pead thinks UC could beat osu this year. This team has been nothing but humble despite all the success the past two years. A few confident quotes while answering idiotic, baited, questions from hack reporters and now they are "full of themselves". Worthless article.

The Real Question is: "Is Paul Daugherty full of Himself"?...the day after he writes an article about UC in the NC game..he writes this...Paul will be the FIRST one writng an article if UC should falter....bank on it...people like Daugherty just can't enjoy the success..they have to find fault... and the answer to the question is...well I guess we really don't have to answer the question...we all know the answer...don't we Paul????

RE: Bearcats Full of Themselves
I guess I'm just as confused by the title of the column. The title implies that the team is full of themselves, yet the only quote from a Bearcat that's been in the national media is that of Pead. One player does not speak for the team. Where are the rest of these quotes from the other players?

Also, why shouldn't ANY player from ANY ranked program feel confident enough to state that their team would "win" against another opponent? Pead didn't say that UC would crush/embarrass/humiliate OSU. I don't find that odd or cocky coming from a player on the #14 team speaking about the #13 team.

RE: Bearcats Full of Themselves
I find Pead's comment confident. He is happy with his college decision and said they would win. I would find fault if he didn't think we could win the game.

PD always love to spin something great at UC into something negative. Oh well, new day same old tired PD/ Enquirer.
