RE: Schmitts status??
I have to echo emuph`s sentiment to Andy and his family who we have become great friends with over the last 4 years.....A "medical redshirt" is not and official NCAA term, but the term is used when a student athlete is injured after participating in a limited amount of competition during a particular academic year and then qualifies for a medical hardship waiver.....The injury nor illness must occur when the student athlete has not participated in more than "2" contest/dates of competition or 20% of the schools scheduled contest/dates of competition in his/her sport (whichever number is greater)....on a lighter note, after Andy got the bad news about his knee, I know he recieved a phone call that uplifted his spirits alot. They dont come much tougher than Andy and we very well may not have seen the last of him on a football field.

It's actually 3 games or 30%..rule changed recently. I don't think Andy is eligible for a medical redsirt because he already had a regular redshirt. Charlies Batch actually had 2 medical redshirts at EMU and played 6 years.

all my best to Andy. I left that game 1/2 through the third quarter and was all hot and bothered. Once i heard about Andy i realized how stupid i was for being worked up. I have lived my life believing that you can turn any negative event into a positive if you work towards it. Hopefully Andy sees it the same way.

let me paraphrase what I think you are saying:

A 6th year may be granted IF the two redshirt years are 'medical'.

Otherwise, a regular redshirt (Andy's freshman year) plus a medical redshirt are not normally given.

Correct?????

That might sound wacky, but IF Andy was given a 6th year might he be able to play at another school as a graduated student? I believe Greg Paulus at Syracuse is doing this.
