University of Memphis Didn't Get the Message
University of Memphis (a TBR colleague) didn't seem to get the message that having recognition in basketball was good enough.

Memphis Hires Former Big East-er as Consultant

To save you the trouble of looking it up, both ETSU and U of M have approximately 15,000 students.

Support area - Shelby Co. alone - 906,825
Support area - Tri-Cities - 480,000

And Shelby Co is much richer as well.

Not even close to a valid comparison.

Memphis' has over 20,000 students. You must be just looking at just undergraduate enrollment? I don't think Memphis' has ever had enrollment less than 20K. They usually are between 20-24K students. Enrollment has dropped in the last 10 years or so, I think in relation to the increase in size of MTSU? Anyway when I attended U of M, it was 23K something.

Being in a BCS conference doesn't matter very much in basketball IMHO. You can schedule a hard out of conference schedule to make up for a weak conference, you can't do that in football. So being in a BCS conference is huge for football. Memphis football is struggling, and always has, it is in SEC country after all.

The MSA for Memphis is over 1 million, you can't compare this service area to Memphis. I have lived years in both. Memphis can't compete for recruits in football with Ole Miss so close, much less UT. Basketball is a different thing, Memphis is a basketball school in a basketball town. Which is why they get 18K for basketball games, and only 30K for football.

Memphis culture is totally different than the Tri Cities also. Personally, I think this is why enrollment at Memphis has decreased.....

As usual, 'THE QUITTERS', bbuc and fan31 talk down to the Tri-Cities, the community, the alumni and the fans.

Thank God you don't work for me. With your attitudes you would be gone the first time you spit out the drivel that you put on this board.

For enrollment I was quoting a news report from the Memphis paper. Could be they had the figure wrong or either they or I took it out of context. If it was I, I apologize for the error.

No problem, I think the undergraduate enrollments are close. Memphis has always had a large graduate enrollment that pushes them up.

Memphis' culture is totally different, but I don't know if that is the problem with enrollment.

I think it has been a variety of factors. While there are a couple of really good public schools in Memphis, many are terrible, so the pool of students who would go to a non-private school for the population is weak. The University has tried to raise admission standards which impacted enrollment some what. I think now that MTSU has had so much money thrown in to it, few students from Nashville go to Memphis like in the past. Historically in Nashville you had Vandy ($$, standards), which isn't very big student wise. You had Tennessee State (historically black) and not very big or well funded, or you could got to Tennessee Tech, which is limited in curriculum options. So in the past Memphis was an option, for someone wanting to attend an in state school. Now I think that fewer Nashville area students have to leave the Nashville area. I'm just guessing though.

What I have quit from? I am a big supporter of Bucs Basketball, I never was an avid ETSU football fan. Now that it's gone I don't miss it. I am not giving up on the effort to bring back football. I am just saying in this and other threads to the people who want football back - put up or shut up.

I am in no way talking down the Tri-Cities, the community, the alumni and the fans. I am saying respect those things. If they don't want to support football that's their choice. But the people on this board that whine about it and cry for the good old days without doing anything about it, I will put down without hesitation.

Thank God I don't work for you, because in my line of work you need to see things for what they are and work with what you've got.

wOW..I'd hate to be fired from that neat job asking people if they want fries with that....

Its not drivel. Memphis is a huge community, has access to a major stadium and charges top bucks for season tickets and admissions. That wouldn't go here. Come to think of it, given your sense of reality, I doubt if you would be in any position to hire anyone. How many people does it take to clean the mens room anyway? 02-13-banana

The put up or shut up is not valid. Two years ago the BFFF put up $400,000 seed money to bring back football. So it has been put up.

The arguement you make implies money grows on trees. It simply isn't valid.

It also resigns itself to agreeing with the administration's economic model. In other words, it does not ask why ETSU would try to construct a baseball field to revitalize the area around campus instead of an arena, which clearly would be more conducive to economic growth around it.

It simply accepts the ETSU administrative arguement that "we can't afford football but can afford a new golf facility, to start up two new soccer teams and build them a still-not-completed field, a softball field, etc."

400K isn't enough money for anything.

Final thing on Memphis.

Shall we compare the Tri-Cities area in population to that of Starkville or Oxford? How about Tallahassee? What about the demographics and size of Johnson City-Kingsport-Bristol to that of Johnstown-Altoona-State College?

The arguement for ETSU is simply we don't have anything else. Memphis at least has the Grizzlies.

So, if Memphis has double the size of our area and two major team sports entities (The Grizzlies and Tigers), shouldn't the Tri-Cities have at least one (ETSU)?

If not, why did ETSU become a NCAA Division I program in the first place?

Memphis is roughly the size of Nashville, demographics are different (more wealthy and more poor, less middle class). Nashville has a pro football team are you saying the tri cities are going to be able to lure the NFL?

Saying that the Memphis or Nashville is double the size of the tri cities is misleading, they are really larger than that.

The tri-cites has one, UT, that is the problem.

Uh, you seem to forget that Nashville has the Predators and numerous Division I colleges (Vandy, Belmont, Lipscomb, Tennessee State, MTSU- and probably someone else I've forgotten about).

My God, if Nashville can have all that, can't we have one Division I school trying to do something other than finish No. 31 in golf?

Your spins are failing. How did you get the Tri-Cities should get an NFL team out of my last post?

I hate it when I have to agree with you. Can't you be a fan of Dave Mullins and having the mentality of "well we can't do that?"
