Only to the un-informed.
UAB actually lost the two previous meetings against SMU in 2005 and 2006, seasons in which the Mustangs finished 5-6 and 6-6 respectively. Not good, not unprecedented, but certainly not 'embarrassing'. SMU played tough under Phil Bennett, who just couldn't get them over the hump. And they're playing tough under June Jones, who has them 2-0 for the first time since 1996.
I'll start by saying this: as much as I
love troy, the way Troy's played, there's a 60% chance we'll lose the game saturday. I've said a lot of things to defend Troy and I've said some thing to the effect that Troy couldn't really beat anyone. To be honest, it's because I don't really know how to judge this Troy team. So I'm sorry If I flip flop from time to time.
Now, to play devil's advocate:
Quote:June Jones, who has them 2-0 for the first time since 1996.
You have to think who they played. SFA went 4-8 in 1-AA ball last year. SMU was really bad in 1-A ball last year. All seems about right. SMU edged out a team of similar talent. Then they edged out UAB, who beat Rice, who isn't all that good this year. So is SMU all that good? No. Is UAB? No, but they're probably a little better than last year.
The reason they have a good chance to win, is because everyone and their mother knows Troy's Achilles Heal has been running quarterbacks. UAB's pass defense isn't that great, but Troy's passing game hasn't been stellar, so it could miss an opportunity to capitalize on that.
I love Troy, but it's gonna be a lot closer than a lot of people expect. Troy's not as good as we'd have hoped, and UAB's a little better than last year.
History? UAB's won the last two by a combined score of 48-10. On the flip side, Troy hasn't lost a home opener in 18 years. Now we see why this game with our instate rival is going be a big deal.
