Raised hackles are almost as bad as Shingles.

Hackles are an involuntary reflex, like mouth salivating at the sight of food on a plate. In this case it's Whinerines on a plate.

dog displaying hackles (look along the top of his back). This is a reflex action when dogs get in a 'fightin' mode. My beagles double their height when they show hackles!
