MORGANTOWN — Perhaps West Virginia University quarterback Jarrett Brown has had too much time to think about things: Sitting around behind Patrick White for four years certainly gives you time to think.

Not pressed every day of his career with preparing for an opponent as he would be as a starter, Brown has had time to think about football in a slightly different way. The knowledge he’s picked up has been the same kind a coach picks up, through film, through looking at X’s and O’s, not necessarily live defenders.

Now, as he takes over the job from White with nothing less than the weight of the universe — and in West Virginia, the football program does seem to be the entire universe from September to December — he sees himself in something of a different light than maybe any quarterback before him.

I plan on being more of a player-coach,” Brown said the other day as camp appeared in his rear view mirror and Liberty began to come into view ahead. “I’ll be watching a lot of film. I’m a senior. I have most of my credits out of the way. I’ll have time.”

In the past, he learned his assignments within the offense, as well as the assignments of others.

But there was something lacking. This was Jarrett Brown performing in Patrick White’s offense.

Rich Rodriguez had designed it to take advantage of White’s skills, which differ quite a bit from Brown’s.

Not that Brown minded. Hardly, he could do the duties and besides, he was playing maybe 10 percent of the time, White the rest of the time.

Last year, however, when Rodriguez abandoned his team and his home state, changes were made to the offense. Still it was to revolve around White’s talents, but there was no Steve Slaton and there was no Owen Schmitt, so it had to change and the changes became more Jarrett Brown friendly, if you will.

Now, as there are less than two weeks to the opener — and yes, that’s all that’s left even though Brown maintains that surprises him because “I lose track of the days in camp” — Brown feels as if he’s wearing a new uniform, one that was custom made for him.

This is Jarrett Brown’s offense, and he knows it.

I see myself and the offense in a whole different perspective,” Brown admitted. “I see the offense the way Coach Mullen sees the offense, why he calls certain plays.”

Mullen, of course, is offensive coordinator Jeff Mullen, who believes in multiple formations, motion and movement and in throwing the football.

Mullen also believes in getting the ball to his tight end and to his running back. Look for Noel Devine to be used extensively in the passing game, as will tight end Tyler Urban.

The tight ends are very, very special, especially Tyler,” Brown said. “He’s young and he’s gifted. He’s an extra blocker. He has great hands and a big body. He’s my security blanket. He has a year under his belt now. It’s scary — he has two more years.”

Brown has been visualizing what this will be like for a couple of years now, his finger on the trigger surrounded by playmakers. He knows who goes where and what they can do when they get there. What’s more, he now not only understands his offense, but he understands the defenses that he faces, which is light years from the freshman who came in bursting with talent but without a real clue of the inner workings of the sport.

He knows what he can do, what he can’t do.

I dreamed of being in the spread offense,” Brown said. “I dreamed of covering every part of the field ... downfield, every player touching the ball. How can you guard it?

That’s the mystery of the new season. A year ago, as the offense started to develop with White at quarterback, defenders handled it fairly well. The Mountaineers’ point totals and yardage fell dramatically from the previous season.

They have spent an entire off-season looking at what WVU would likely do with Brown rather than White and will be ready to defend it. It is going to come down to execution, blocking and play calling, Mullen outguessing the defensive coordinators and Brown outperforming the defenders.
