Assistant named to All-Decade Team for WNBA franchise
July 31, 2009
George Mason women's basketball assistant coach Simone Edwards played six seasons in the WNBA and won a championship with the 2004 Seattle Storm. This Saturday, she will be honored as she and six others have been named members of the Storm All-Decade Team.
Edwards retired in 2005 as the longest-tenured member of the inaugural Storm roster. At the time, she was the Storm's all-time leader in games played, third in rebounds, fourth in points, blocks and minutes and fifth in steals. Assigned to the Storm as a free agent in May of 2000, she played in 178 games with 625 rebounds, 936 points, 56 blocks and 83 steals in 3,184 minutes of action. In 2001, she averaged 7.4 points and 4.9 rebounds while starting 27 games, all career highs. She had a career-high 19 points against Houston that year and a career-high 14 rebounds, a franchise-record at the time.
"It's an honor," Edwards told the WNBA web site on being selected to the All-Decade Team. "You feel loved because you've been left for a little while now and you still have those faithful fans there who remember you. It's very special knowing that out of all the people who have been through the Storm since 2000, they still remember me and my contributions to the Storm and the community. It's something I'm proud of and really feel honored. I'm touch. It's just exciting."
Edwards will be inducted with former teammate Kamila Vodichkova, current Storm players Sue Bird, Janell Burse, Swin Cash and Lauren Jackson and color analyst Adia Barnes. They will be honored at halftime of Saturday's game against the San Antonio Silver Stars.
