COLORADO SPRINGS, CO -- Old Dominion University Sports Hall of Famer, and New Orleans Hornets assistant Kenny Gattison ('86) will be one of five coaches that will help coach the 2009 USA National Team scheduled to participate in a mini camp on July 22-25 in Las Vegas.

The mini camp is the first step of preparation for the 2010-12 competition involving the National Team.

Joining Gattison will be Toronto Raptors head coach Jay Triano along with Utah Jazz assistant Tyrone Corbin, Detroit Pistons assistant Dave Cowens, and Minnesota Timberwolves assistant Jerry Sichting. All were selected by USA Basketball Chairman Jerry Colangelo.

Gattison completed his sixth season as a Hornets' assistant. He was inducted into the ODU Sports Hall of Fame in 1991. He was also selected to Sun Belt Conference's all-time team.

The Wilmington, NC., native became the Sun Belt Conference's all-time rebound leader with 963 which ranks him fourth all-time at ODU. He is currently 11th on ODU's all-time scoring list with 1,623 Career points.

During his four years at ODU, the Monarchs were 80-42 with two NCAA and two NIT appearances. As a senior, Gattison led the eighth seeded Monarchs to the second round of the NCAA tournament, beating West Virginia, then losing to eventual national runner up Duke in the second round.

As a junior, Gattison earned All-Tournament honors in the ECAC Holiday festival. In that two-day tournament, he scored 48 points and grabbed 22 rebounds against the likes of St. John's and Rutgers. Gattison broke double figures 87 times, and performed 34 double-doubles.

Gattison's jersey number 44 is retired and hangs in the Constant Center. He was named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year and earned honorable mention All-American honors by the ASSOCIATED PRESS and THE SPORTING NEWS in 1985 and 1986. A third round NBA draft pick, Gattison played nine Years in the NBA, and was the Charlotte Hornets third all-time field goal percentage leader at .520.

Kenny is one of three former ODU basketball greats to be currently working for NBA teams. 17-year NBA veteran and ODU Hall of Famer Mark West ('83) is the Assistant General Manager with the Phoenix Suns, and ODU Hall of Famer Dave Twardzik ('72) is the Assistant General Manager with the Orlando Magic.
