What is CONCACAF?
All you've ever wanted to know about CONCACAF

In an effort to bring more members from the other wonderful CONCACAF nations I thought this would be a helpful start, and also help people learn more about our confederation, and help people who are interested in CONCACAF to learn more about it.

I hope you find it informative. Also, feel free to add anything you'd like.

What is CONCACAF?

CONCACAF (the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football) is the continent-wide governing body for association football in North America, Central America and the Caribbean. Three South American entities, the independent nations of Guyana and Suriname, and the French département of French Guiana, are also members.

CONCACAF was founded in its current form in 1961 and is one of the six continental confederations affiliated with FIFA. Its primary administrative functions are to organize competitions for national teams and clubs, and to conduct World Cup qualifying tournaments.

New CONCACAF Qualifying Proposal Levels Playing Field By going away from the six-team Hexagonal
[Image: 6a00e54eea3d1c88340133ed645e0e970b-800wi]
Under a new proposed qualifying format, the Hexagonal would go the way of the VCR. Instead of one six-team group, the final round would feature two four-team groups, each team playing their group rival home and away. Group winners would advance directly, runners-up would play each other with the winner claiming the third and final direct berth. Playoff loser would then play a team from another confederation for another World Cup spot.

RE: What is CONCACAF?
CONCACAF qualifying system news update
18 games to reach the 2014 World Cup, according to http://www.Diez.hn.

The info comes from Mr. Alfredo Hawit Banegas, member of CONCACAF's Executive Committee.

There's also this article in http://www.LaPrensa.hn, with the info provided by Mario Monterrosa, CONCACAF's deputy secretary.

The system
1. Preliminary round (if needed) to trim the number of teams to 32.
2. 8 groups of 4 teams. Top two in each group through to the next round.
3. 4 groups of 4 teams. Top two in each group through to the next round.
4. 2 groups of 4 teams.

- If CONCACAF will have 3.5 spots, the winners of the groups will qualify directly to the World Cup, while the second placed teams will play-off against each other first, then against a team from another confederation (CONMEBOL).

- If CONCACAF gets 4 spots as they hope, the top two teams in each group will qualify to the World Cup.

The system needs to be approved by FIFA's Executive Committee and I can't see why FIFA wouldn't approve it. Also according to Mr. Hawit, the allocation of places for the 2014 FIFA World Cup will be announced in October. Mr. Monterrosa, however, thinks the allocation will be known in December.

FIFA approve the new CONCACAF qualifying format

According to various articles in the Mexican and Central American press (see this Univision article (http://futbol.univision.com/centroameric...o-el-nuevo) for instance, FIFA have approved the new CONCACAF 2014 World Cup qualifying format (http://www.football-rankings.info/2010/0...pdate.html).

It's interesting to know the draw for CONCACAF will take place on May 31st, 2011 in Zurich and will use the May 2011 FIFA ranking to seed the teams.

The Brazilians have announced the main draw will take place on July 31st, 2010 in Brazil

Also, there some info regarding the spots - both CONCACAF and CONMEBOL will keep their quota (3.5 and 4.5).

CONCACAF wants 4th World Cup spot

NEW YORK – CONCACAF wants another spot in the World Cup.

The executive committee of the confederation of North and Central America and Caribbean soccer on Sunday announced that it will fight for a guaranteed fourth place at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

During a meeting in Panama City, Panama, site of the Copa Centroamericana, the executive committee said it felt that CONCACAF had earned the right to increase its allotment of slots at World Cup finals from the 3.5 it currently possesses.

“We believe that CONCACAF deserves another full place at the World Cup finals due to the performances of our teams on the field and the actions of our confederation off it,” CONCACAF president Jack Warner said in a statement. “We are unified in our efforts to make this happen.”

A decision on the subject is expected to be made at a meeting of the FIFA Executive Committee in March.

RE: What is CONCACAF?
It is the main association football competition of the men's national football teams governed by CONCACAF, determining the regional champion of North America, Central America, and the Caribbean.I think the most likely scenario for second place teams would be a play off against each other and the winner qualifies.

RE: What is CONCACAF?
No World Cup?
There's always Copa Panamericana

Consensus is that the US was robbed of the 2022 World Cup. Well, here comes the next best thing. And it even comes six years earlier!

The president of the Ecuadorean soccer federation, whose brother is on the CONMEBOL executive committee, told Mexican media that the USA iis to host the special 2016 Copa América in celebration of the South American confederation's 100-year anniversary - Copa Panamericana.

Hopefully we can organize a big event, because we have 100 years and we want to celebrate big,". Hawit, however would prefer the competition to be hosted in United States for financial reasons stating that "the market is in the United States, the stadiums are in the United States, the people are in the United States. The study that we have made [shows] that everything’s in the United States."

CONCACAF officially commented on the competition in July 2012, CONCACAF President Jeffrey Webb commented that there was much organizing to be done. Chiriboga noted that the special edition of the Copa América would feature 16 teams: 10 from South America and six from CONCACAF. Apparently there would be a qualification process to determine the six CONCACAF nations. If US fans thought that was big news, the Ecuadorean chief also mentioned that the US would likely get an inivitation to participate in the 2015 Copa América in Brazil.

Participants
10 CONMEBOL teams will participate along with six teams from the CONCACAF region.

CONMEBOL
1. Argentina
2. Bolivia
3. Brazil
4. Chile
5. Colombia
6. Ecuador
7. Paraguay
8. Peru
9. Uruguay
10. Venezuela

CONCACAF
1. United States (host)
2. Mexico (invitee)

The Caribbean Football Union, who represent 31 of CONCACAF's 41 national associations, are considering breaking away and forming a seventh FIFA confederation.

That would be a horrible confederation. Top 5 in CONCACAF in rankings and qualifying are all not in CFU. That confederation at least for now would get 1/2 an entry into the World Cup

I bet the true intent of this is to exploit the expansion of the World Cup, and grab 2 World Cup berths for a group of nations that otherwise has little chance of getting any team into the World Cup.

The proposed allocation of slots for an expanded WC has Concacaf and Conmebol getting 6 berths each. Conmebol has 10 nations. Concacaf would also have 10 if the Caribbean nations leave. The CFU pitch to FIFA would be, "C'mon, give us little guys a chance, those 10-nation confederations don't need 6 berths each, take 1 away from each, or take 2 away from Concacaf, and let our 34 nations have some opportunities."

Well, that brings up this point that came up in my mind, should the U.S. & Mexico leave CONCACAF and join another soccer federation, like CONMEBOL or whatever group Great Britain, Germany, & France play in?

How would that happen and why would we want to do that? UEFA is all European squads and CONMEBOL is all South American squads. Plus, we should make the World Cup every time in CONCACAF. Not going to happen consistently in the other federations necessarily.

RE: What is CONCACAF?
Merging Concacaf and Conmebol won't happen because this is soccer and each has its own cadre of people that have gotten rich off of their positions within Concacaf or Conmebol. None of these fat cats wants to upset their own gravy train.

But if it could happen -- especially if the Caribbean nations left to form their own weakling association -- then a combined 20-nation "Americas" federation would benefit both North and South American programs.

The national teams of the North American countries would improve from regular competition at a higher level than Concacaf, the South American teams would get more access to the audiences and money in North America, the "Americas" qualifying matches for the World Cup would fill stadiums and generate lots of TV revenue, and there would probably be at least 10 World Cup places (in the expanded World Cup) for the 20 nations to compete for.

And a Champions League among club teams in the "Americas" would be far more entertaining and competitive than Concacaf's Champions League.

But it won't happen.

Don't know how it would happen, but would like for it too. Why? I'm tired of seeing the U.S. lose out to nations like Martinique, Grenada, etc. I would rather compete with the big boys than eliminated by no-names.
Wrong on UEFA. Israel is a member of the UEFA and they are on the continent of Asia, not Europe. I'm fine with Turkey being in the UEFA because Turkey is in both Europe & Asia, so really it's a matter of preference for Turkey as to what league they want to be in. Same with Russia. But Israel is another matter, if you go by strictly European for UEFA. For the record, I'm fine with Israel being in the UEFA; I'm just saying that UEFA is not entirely an European league.

You're probably right, but then again, you never know. If ESPN saw same value to an Americas' Cup, and talked it up with other North & South American countries' sports networks, it could very well happen.

I have no idea what some of those are, and I'm OK w/ the rest. My issue is confined to Americans speaking a non-American dialect of English to try to sound snow flakier.

Soccer is just slang for association.

Football is just a broad term and doesn't define what discipline. Like the NFL and CFL are part of the Gridiron discipline.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football

Not sure why you let how someone uses a term bother you... or how it sounds snowflakier. If you haven't watched rugby or Aussie rules I'd definitely recommend it.

if CFU left CONCACAF that would leave 10 nations and would make it easy to join the 10 nations in South America.
