RE: the dome
I guess their feeling is that since the fans are so far away from the court it does not matter that the cheerleaders are standing or not. (I am only partially kidding).

RE: the dome
If you guys want students on the floor, UTC's arena doesn't do that. Those folks are further than 6 feet from the floor, which isn't even as good as the dome. Outside from being a bit steeper bringing the crowd closer to the court and obviously built for basketball, I don't see that as the model. The attendance there is also not all that intimidating, at least in the pics presented. Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater, OK, may be more suitable for what you are talking about. The students are on the floor and raise havoc, especially at the game this picture was taken at, against their hated rival Oklahoma (my alma mater). I tried to copy it but couldn't get it to work. Here's the link. It a tough place to play - I think it seats like 10,000 now but we could do a smaller version of this, and maybe via a renovation of the dome of some sort.

http://www.craftontullsparks.com/assets/...me-day.jpg

But I like the dome fine and said that in a previous thread. Is it perfect? No. I sit 6 rows off of the court and like the closeness with the game. The games are fun. The exit is no problem - good grief, it takes a heck of a lot longer to get out of bigger arenas built for b-ball. I get out of the parking lot via going out the 'back' of campus going by the CPA and the dorms. I get out of there in 5 mins tops.

I think Gold is right on the money: This is just more of the inferiority complex creeping in. Sure, it would be a great to have a brand spanking new arena, but anyone have $35, $40, $45, or $50 million bucks? Yeah, maybe we can get it from the state like Wise did, since the TN economy is doing so well.

RE: the dome
The reason I compared the dome to other arenas inside the Atlantic Sun is because it has been my ongoing fear that gymansiums such as the curb event center or allen arena is exactly or very close to what the administration seeks to deliver to ETSU. The cg rendering of the future arena that leaked several months ago points this out.

One thing is certain...at some point the dome is going to be replaced. I don't know when that will be but at one point it will be. I thought this would be the perfect opportunity for the fans to come together and point out what is special about the dome....what can be improved inside the dome....what a new arena should and should not look like. If it is true the administration does read this site then it is time we should go on record concerning what it is we want. I can't promise it will do any good but we have to start somewhere.

I'm too tired to really get into it at the moment but I like many of the ideas brought up in the posts. I shall post in detail later.

Man, GoBucs just keeps spreading the pessimism. Living in the past. Why not look to the future and say, "Yes, this can be done!"

All that said, I used to like the dome when it was full.

I have sat in the student section at UTC(long story) and believe me they are much closer to the action than students at ETSU. For one thing they aren't cordoned off behind the basket in crappy blue bleachers. If you look at the first picture I posted you can see their student section at the bottom left of the picture in the yellow shirts, sitting court side(the kind of seats ETSU students are banned from I might add). UTC's arena may not be THE model but its a better model than the Dome.

Kev, I completely agree. It's the "we can't, it's too expensive, things are fine like they are" logic that keep things from improving. I mean why try to improve, why look to the future when you can ummmmmm NOT.

It pains me to say but thank God I`m getting out for Grad school, not sure I could take 2 more years of athletic purgatory.

RE: the dome
I'll admit that behind the basket in the student section is probably not the greatest place to watch a game but then again I wouldn't sit behind the basket in any arena. It's just not my seat of choice. I was also not really aware that the cheerleaders stood up for the entire game....mainly b/c I have never been interested in ETSU cheerleaders, if you know what I mean. hint hint stop recruiting girls from daniel boone. Now our student section gets a lot of guff on this board but I actually think they do a pretty good job in this climate. Especially when there is something going on the court that is worthy of getting heated about. There are about four or five guys who plaint their bodies blue and when the situation calls for it they can get mean. I'm sure it would help if beer was served at games but I know that isn't going to happen.

There have been a lot of good ideas and points on this thread. I like the idea of raising the court. I don't know the feasability of it but I think it is certainly an interesting idea to make the dome even more visually unique than it already is. I am quite certain it will never happen but it is an interesting idea. Another thing that needs to be done in the dome is that it could be maintained to look like ETSU gives a damn. For instance one of the banners was allowed to hang lopsided during pretty much the entire season last year. It has also been suggested to me by someone else on this board that the banners should be brought in closer to the action so that they don't seem so far away. I think this is a very good idea and I would also add to it that Jersey #'s 42, 54, 22, and 24 need to be hanging from the rafters as well. If we don't honor our own greatness why should Belmont? Actually this is one issue that I am not going to rest on until I see it happen. 22 needs to be hanging in the rafters for the rest of time. Even if we build a new arena it should always hang whereever etsu basketball calls home. That should be a UNITED front that the fans take until it happens. We owe the little floor general nothing less. And the other three jerseys as well.

Someday a new arena will be built at ETSU. It is inevitable. When this happens I hope that great care will be taken to ensure that it is a unique and formidable place that puts pride in the heart of every buccaneer fan and terror in the hearts of every member of the opposition. So it is important to go ahead and state that building something akin to the Curb event center, Allen arena, The ramsey center, or even what Appalachian State built will not accomplish this. There is something inherintly wrong with their design concept. First of all they look unfinished and therefor unthreatening. When one sits down courtside at Allen Arena and looks beyond the horizon to see people walking around and standing at concession stands then something is wrong. If you don't understand what I am talking about then I refer you to GobucsGo's picture of Oklahoma State. You can't get that kind of atmosphere with a lot of open and unused space. Now I know what you're saying...what about the dome? Well that's a very different thing. Because it is basically like shooting into space and unlike anywhere else in the country (minus Iowa State or whoever it was) the Dome has a certain charm and uniqeness factor that allows it to get away with breaking certain basic rules of design. Appalachian State doesn't fit into the exact same category here either but it still falls into the tired cookie cutter trap of modern arenas.

We are looking for vision here. And therefor said vision must start with us. The two suggestions so far...The Round House and Oklahoma State are both very interesting and worthy models. They are both very very difficult places to go in and get a win. The round house was always the top arena in the SoCon...I think we beat chattanooga there only twice in all of the years we played them.

I think we could certainly look at design concepts from those two arena's, and others, and hash out something that is truly our own. In a weird way Oklahoma State kind of reminds me of Asheville in terms of it's basically a big square. I have often said an updated version of the Asheville civic center might be a way to go. It should definitely be at least two levels that is for sure. Let's also not forget that often it is the little things that make an arena so enjoyable. What was more fun than taking that ramp down to the bowels of the arena in the civic center? then you would walk behind stands and behind that giant blue curtain...not being able to see the action yet but the roar of the arena was unmistakable. As you walked along listening to it you couldn't help but get that pounding in your heart until finally you rounded the corner and there it was. The home away from home! The unmistakable smells and sounds and breathtaking vision that was the Asheville Civic Center. Many arena's have this quality in their own right and many do not. I believe that the dome does...not as much as some but certainly a lot more than most (these days). You can smell the court and the lard which passes for nacho cheese in the air.

When talking about a new arena or a revamping of the dome one cannot make the mistake of forget the importance of presentation...i.e. showmanship.

RE: the dome
I hope a new ETSU arena can become a reality. In the meantime there have been some good ideas listed here. I like the idea of raising the court, restrooms need to be refurbished with additional ones added on the lower level. The court needs to be turned around so it's not upside down on televised games or design a court that is upright from both sides. The UTC court is that way except for the center logo. Look at adding more exits to please the fire marshall and enhance seating capacity. Continue each season to upgrade courtside seating

My dream is a 8-10,000 seat city-county owned arena at the corner of State of Franklin and Market Street. Much like the Lawrence Joel Collesium in Winston-Salem used by Wake Forest. It would be leased by ETSU and used for area concerts, convocations, public ice skating, etc.

But, I don't see any of this happening until we get some leadership at the helm who values our university's heritage and alumni. Someone who will champion the plan for a new arena and seek alumni, student and community input. Right now for most of this area ETSU is out of sight and out of mind.

RE: the dome
My only stipulation with going in the city is this....It would have to be blue and gold. And there would have to be permenant fixtures of ETSU history spread through out.

For instance it has been my long time dream of naming the court after mister...or having Les Robinson hall. The hallways need to honor the greats in history. Madison Brooks should be represented. I could go on but you get the idea.

Oh yeah! Got to build on ETSU's past success and heritage. Got to value our alumni. Color scheme would have to be blue and gold as ETSU would be nearby and the biggest user of the building.

I was surprised to learn the Lawrence Joel Colesium was not owned by Wake Forest. It is near the campus and full of WF colors. Winston-Salem values Wake as JC values ETSU, both are big employers in their respective areas.

I`ll tell you what better be in the contract, the city get's no say/veto over who or what events are held in the arena. It's an absolute joke that the city got a say in Ludacris coming to Johnson city.

Gotta love the bible belt 03-puke

RE: the dome
Gold - absolutely agreed about the banners & the jerseys. They need to brought closer to the court, and they need to be prominently displayed. I think that banner is still hanging lopsided, at least it was the last time I was in there. I always liked the way UK did it - they retired the jersey but not the number - which is why they have a slew of jerseys hanging around the arena.

People may not like that idea, but still - what you say is true. We have to market our success better than we do. For example, how about a ceremony hoisting another banner for an NCAA tournament bid at the first home game next year? I hear the athletic department reads this board: So how about a ceremony? And when you hoist that banner, put it somewhere where people can see it during the game, not just during the national anthem. Just a thought...

RE: the dome
Clemsons Little John arena has banners devoted entirely to post season tournaments. One banner has appearances in the NCAA tournament another has appearances in the NIT. And they have those things right in peoples faces, it might serve as a history lesson to those students who think that ETSU ball has never been anywhere.

I remember going to a UT game awhile back and pre game they had a blimp fly aroung the arena and drop off prizes and coupons to fans in the stands. We should get a blimp and only we could make it like 5 times bigger than theirs. It would be fitting considering our place resembles a aircraft hanger.

also, we need a big ass screen hanging over the middle of the court and if a player from the other team some how manages to dunk the ball on us we can show the clip of Talford at the slam dunk contest. Also we need him to give us some audio of him saying, "That dunk was weak, watch how its really done"

Alot of these things cost money, money ETSU doesn't have. Plus, I don't know that a center hung NBA style scoreboard/jumbotron combination would work in the dome, it may collapse the roof. The cheerleaders do need to sit down, and should be split between the two ends. It's ridiculous that doesn't happen, and makes ETSU games look like a damn high school game.
I do like the feel of the roundhouse, but it's too big. They can't consistently fill it up. LittleJohn at Clemson would be right up our alley, with some luxury boxes just to try and get some businesses to spend more money.
Oh, and the Chattanooga students get the end next to the pep band and the two lower sections on the side behind press row next to the pep band. If they fill all that, then they go upstairs.

It's absolutely needed. I'm not saying build 300 boxes or whatever, I'm saying one side, put in about 25-30 tops that the school can get some of the higher end businesses in the region to invest in. You guys want a nicer facility that would attract better recruits and more fans, right? This is part of it.

Luxury–noun
1. a material object, service, etc., conducive to sumptuous living, usually a delicacy, elegance, or refinement of living rather than a necessity

By definition a luxury is not a necessity, no one NEEDS luxury boxes. Do I really need to list all of the things at an ETSU basketball game that aren't needed?

Yeah, gotta have the suites and high-end seating to help pay for the arena. That's how they have helped finance all of the improvements to Neyland Stadium and Thompson-Boling down the road. Plus countless other facility upgrades around the country.

Same premise, just a smaller economy of scale.
