Loud Music from cars
You know what? IMO, it's annoying that these people are playing their music too loud in their cars. I mean, I woke up at 3 a.m. to some loud music and I live in Midtown. I know that some of them would say it's a free country, but I have a right to have some gosh darn peace and quiet. And to think of it, what if an emergency service has to get by? Talk about being disrespectful when you have the music too loud. If I were to call the cops, I fear that the cops would come too late to catch the culprits.

By the way, does anyone know the noise ordinance fines?

RE: Loud Music from cars
You wouldn't like riding in my car very much, LOL. Hell I'm 52 so maybe it's because I can't hear but I suspect it has more to do with the fact that rock and roll was meant to be played as loud as humanly possible. Now I will say that you wouldn't be able to hear mine through my raised windows and I don't have a 40 foot megathumping sub woofer in the trunk either. I get where you're coming from though, it is irritating, especially when you can hear the thump from 10 car lengths away with the windows up during the day.

3am is crazy no matter how you look at it.

I play my music very loud as well. But usually turn it down at stoplights or if I can tell that it is bothering someone. I guess I am a polite metalhead.

I crank my Allman Bros. up pretty darn loud, but my windows are usually up and I am careful at intersections.

If I hear an offending boombox right next to me that actually shakes my car, I will just put a bagpipes disc in and blow off my doors. You should see the looks I get. Of course, I pull off too quick to get shot.

jk/I am really kind of a granny driver.

RE: Loud Music from cars
hmm...I have had it so long, I don't remember. But them pipes is LOUD! And it certainly gets attention.

I found myself in an interesting situation one evening heading back downtown to where my BF lives. We pulled into the Exxon at Danny Thomas and Poplar, and immediately we were surrounded by a club of spinners with boomboxes blaring rap.
Well, I just happened to have my Larry Finch CD with some pretty cool rap on it, so I chunked it in my disc player, opened up my sunroof and let 'her rip. I have a pretty nice sports car, but, boy, did this 50-something, pardon-the-term, "white lady" get some stares. All in good fun. The look on my BF's face was priceless. Don't you just love this town!

We've got 2 bad apple houses on our street -- 1 redneck white trash and the other just looks horrible but they don't bother anyone, but it is literally right across the street from me so I have to look at it all the time. The teenaged redneck white trash son is in to the loud music crap. Luckily he doesn't keep it bumping just for the hell of it in the driveway too much, but I'm afraid that's coming. Hopefully someone will steal his crap again like a few months ago. No, I didn't do it (this time).

Loud music is cool as long as I can't hear it.

One of my favorite bumper stickers of all time:
"If I Wanted To Hear Your Music, I'd Be In Your Car"

Even a solid gray haired 60 year old likes to turn up "Gimme 3 Steps" or "Jim Dandy" on an occasion or two, but intersections, gas stations and convienence stores aren't the place.

3 am is wrong. And at any time it's disrespectful. Many occupants I find are using it as "overcompensation." They look around wanting people to pay attention to them. Hey, my music is loud, look at me!!

Meh.

Not too much of a problem here in Huntsville - city ordinance forbids it and the police enforce it. Does Memphis have such an ordinance?

I have been tempted before to just lay my hand on the horn and let it honk while people were blasting their music....I figured I'd get shot, but isn't it the same annoying thing?

RE: Loud Music from cars
We used to have the quietest city in America and won awards for it. I am sure we still have a noise ordinance. I used to be afraid to honk my horn for carpool when I was a teenager. Horns were forbidden except in emergencies.

Somewhere along the way, the authorities stopped enforcing our laws.

BTW, I only crank my music up in self defense and rarely. I couldn't be bothering anyone because no one can probably hear me over the prevailing din. And one of my pet peeves is these darn Exxon stations all over town who allow panhandling, loud noise, and just about everything else to go on on their lots. I have complained to corporate about ten times. I no longer patronize them.
