It looks like Coach Cunningham is the first
assistant we've had that is able to bring in some foreign talent. Joe
Harge brought in Kimmo, but unfortunately he was the only one, and didn't last long enough to really help us. A program like ours needs some foreign players to compete with Western and others in our league. Hopefully Coach Cunningham, who by the way is a very classy individual, will stick around for a long while.

In addition, Coach Terry has great Philly connections, and between the two we might pick up some outstanding players to go with those Coach Golding can pick up out of Texas and surrounding states. We probably have the best all around coaching staff we've had in a long time. I always tend to be optimistic about our chances, and I don't know how many games we'll win this year, but if talent is the measuring stick, we should be better off than any year I can recall recently. And I've always said that coaching has not been our problem. I've always thought that if you give Steve and Joe Kleine the talent, they can coach them into a winning group. This might be the year that begins to prove or disprove my belief.01-lauramac2

I wonder if it is just coincidence that since we now have a bona fide big man coach, we are bring in bona fide big men?

Foreign players is one place we might get a little leg up on the bigger schools, if we work hard at it.

Unlike many home grown players, many of them probably grow up without prejudice against Mid Majors. I doubt that Pittsburgh or Minnesota, and especially Ole Miss, would mean any more than UALR to a lot of those kids. And in basketball, if you can pick up one or two impact players, you can have a dynamite season.04-rock

Right you are, Doc. And that is one place where basketball has it over other sports.

Nicholls State

Interesting that Nicholls State has signed so many players from Australia in recent years that in their signing announcement this year they especially emphasized the three in-state players. Wonder if there was some complaining.

Wouldn't complain too much, folks. He got the program in the win column last season. And John McDonnell built the Fayetteville track program from a group of Irish distance runners.

Looks to me like they should be heavily recruiting Australia! And since ancient Troy is what is now Turkey, or what is known as Asia Minor, maybe that's where UALR should be recruiting. Do they play basketball in Turkey? That would be a natural recruiting area for "The Trojans".01-lauramac2

And perhaps Troy should change their nickname to the Turkeys. Only room for one Trojan Team in this league! 05-mafia

Actually that is not that far-fetched, since former Trojan Danny McCall is playing pro ball in Turkey.

I had forgotten about Danny McCall. All I can remember about him is that when here it was my belief that he did not get the PT he deserved. Glad to hear he is still playing and hope he is making some money.

RE: Nicholls State
Actually, with the way our alumni players are scattered all over the world, we ought to have a pretty good scouting system already in place.
