That's easy to say, until the gov't starts prescribing things that ultimately turn out to be harmful.
If you have a principle, then you have to stand on it.
Absolutely agree.
I'm no anti-government nut... but i DO believe in self-determination. When we allow the government into our lives (the camel with its nose in the tent) they tend to take over our lives.
This is a law-abiding family content to live their lives under a certain religious sect that prefers to eschew "modern" medicine. Why is it OUR right to interfere? Where is the National interest in saving THIS boy?
I'm sorry... but I think that barring mental deficiency... and being a member of what many would call a crazy religion doesn't by itself qualify... the state has no standing in this case.
and not trying to be grammar police, but relating where the term comes from.... they flew the coop... as in chicken coop. They left their confines. a term for when the rooster, responsible for keeping an entire coop of chickens "happy"... flew away.....A coupe is a 2 door car....

About the coupe-coop thing...I was almost going to type 'coup', but on this one I was just going to cut my losses and go with coupe.
About a mental deficiency...it has been said that the boy cannot read or write and that he may not understand what's going on there. New information comes out everyday.

We're talking about a minor not an adult who can make informed decisions on their own. I don't want the gov't telling people what to do, but if it's a medical certainty that the kid will die without treatment and the mom refuses it because she's a wacko, the Department of Children and Families should step in. No different than cases of abuse or neglect.

Well this is actually neglect.
I certainly see your point. However, it's challenging to say that the woman's course of treatment is worse. If the doctor is being honest, and this is essentially a routine treatment, that makes a difference. However, there are plenty of times that medical professionals overstate their case.

I just saw a piece on CNN where a boy who had the same disease and they also refused treatment. They used natural medicine, and he is alive today living cancer free. Where did they get their medicine? (Canada)

I saw that also. I don't know what to think about this.
I will submit though that without the government being involved and a free marketplace for medicine and insurance were in effect...this would likely be less of an issue. Instead of these people being able to make choices for their lives freely...force and coercion is now being introduced into this situation....of course....by the government. It has the monopoly on the use of force...and...has no problem using it.
