RE: Insight into why Cal left????
Our family has been buying tickets since the fieldhouse/along with football tickets. We never missed a season. We didn't have season tickets because of him,,it was because of the school/teams. We will continue to have those tickets...He is so full of himself.

+1.

Without a National Championship in his first 4 years they will begin to grumble.

Tubby Smith at least was able to shut them up for a few years by winning the National Championship in his first year, cant say the same for KFC if he doesn't espescially with the money he is being paid.

RE: Insight into why Cal left????
I would love to hear what Cal's excuses would be if his first five years in Kentucky went like they did here. I don't think that will happen. I expect UK to contend for the SEC next year, but you never know how those players will gel. Should he struggle at UK, will they listen to the "miserables" line?

Blah blah. He was a modern day Bear Bryant here there he is just another coach after a line of many. May be he will catch a new strain of Syphilis and die slow.

"My time will be spent on recruiting and coaching," he said. "The greatest thing about being here is I can do that. I don't have to fund-raise. Get this one: I don't have to sell tickets. Can you imagine?"

http://www.kentucky.com/978/story/794885.html

what a self-serving, slimy punk.

maybe all the 'fund raising' and 'ticket selling' is what caused him to completely gag on a National Championship in SA last year.

let him pull a choke job like that in a NC game while at KY and come back and tell me how great it is to be there. he got virtually NO heat from the Tiger fans after hand delivering an NC to Kansas.

what a jakazz

Agree. Parts of the press conference could have been taken from a Memphis press conference in the past. Same song, different team. How fast would Cal leave UK for the NBA?

and you know what's even funnier UMTigerFan? He is about to hand Bill Self a 2nd National Title at Kansas this upcoming year. All Kansas needed to be pre-season favorite to win the National Title in 2009-2010 was a strong outside shooting wing. So,,,,,, dummy hands Bill Self a prospect named Xavier Henry.

RE: Insight into why Cal left????
He will still have to "sell" tickets.

All college coaches do.

Even the older traditional programs have mausoleum like environments-especially ky. They will be juiced at first with the new coach and with what they hope will be teams close to as strong as we had here...after that...despite the internet bravado- ky will need winning and similar motivation.

We responded to winning. Like everyone else. Gillespie got fired for not selling the program. ky coach is already acting like he has all the answers- but I thought the point was that a place like ky already had them.

They did not.

We provided $$ and fans and goodwill and arenas and passion. The rest is bs and he is once again---throwing red meat to his audience. They will eat it until next year, when they are not as good as Memphis.

RE: Insight into why Cal left????
This article confirms my suspicion: Cal was tired of constantly pushing the ball up the hill with regards to defending our lame conference, going on the Best Damn Sports Show Period talking up us (no problem) and C-USA (how many times can you defend UAB/Tulsa/UCF as 'up and coming' programs?....even for Cal that's got to be hard work!), battling with Britton Bonehead (at his wonderful decision to move the C-USA BB tourney to El Paso!?!?! and Tulsa), working out the schedules, schmoozing with other coaches so as to maintain connections for TV purposes, etc.. His son is getting up there in age and I think that all the extraneous stuff he had to do here caught up with him. He's 50, his son is 10-12 (not sure the exact age) and one of his daughters is already in college. I think he just said to himself 'I want to win it all, but don't want to kill myself in the process, here's my window of opportunity'. Kentucky is probably an easier job - in terms of total hours - than the Memphis job. In terms of expectations, fit, etc.. the Memphis job was much better for him. However, Cal looked very tired by the end of this season....so I think that's what went through his head.

In the end, I think Cal made a monumental mistake. He was FAR more likely to win a NC here in the next 5 years than at UK. I will be shocked if Cal can pull off a NC at UKY in the next 5 years. I EXPECTED one here in the next 5 years...especially 2010 had Cal stayed.

To be very honest, there's not much that can be done about this. Our conference affiliation REALLY played a much bigger part of this than we thought.

RE: Insight into why Cal left????
No question- more likely to win a title here with no changes the next five years...

But despite the thoughts that things are easier to accomplish at a ky- I am not buying it...they must win as well...

What you all are forgetting is that Cal is going to say what the people around him want to hear. He did that here and we all ate it up. All KY cares about it coaching and recruiting from him so thats what he is going to tell them..............

Agree. Calipari is the poster child for total lack of class.

RE: Insight into why Cal left????
To illustrate the point, Calipari recalled the impression made when a Kentucky coach entered a recruiting venue. "It's like, Oh, man," he said. "... I'd walk over and ask, 'Do you really want this guy?' If they said, yeah, I said, 'OK, have a nice day.'

"And I walked (out of the gym)."

Sounds like the finch story he would always tell...Just changed the names
