Spoken like a pig. It matters to you guys, you are all so paranoid about being afraid that ASU or any other team in the state going to make little headway with their programs. Things just seem to happen to any of our teams if we start going good. Keep up with history and quit drinking the koolaid.

You be I will root against Arkansas against anyone they are playing. That is because ASU is my team and I don't split loyalties and pretend to be an ASU and deep down know I'm an Arkansas fan first.

The problem ASU, UALR have is they don't have enough diehards that support ASU and UALR. They have a lot of fans that support UAF 1st and then their school. They support UAF first and if they have any money left or if there is a recruit that Arkansas isn't going to get they might like to have them stay at ASU or UALR.

Don't get me wrong ASU and UALR needs those type of fans but, we both need more fans that have ASU and UALR as their #1 priorities.

Sports are no fun if you don't pick a team to root for. Yes, as a sporting ASU fan, I always root for whoever the Hogs are playing. Here lately my batting average is pretty high.05-mafia05-mafia

Agree. It just takes more money than SBC schools can generate. And many SBC football fans probably have divided loyalties with the BCS schools in their state, anyway.

South Alabama doesn't seem to be worrying over the cost of 1A football.
You won't find divided loyalities with many ASU fans....I can't speak for other States but you'll find REAL dislike for the other 1A program in Arkansas by ASU alumni. It's looking like ASU has worked itself down to one money game a year beginning in 2010. That's manageable in the SunBelt and will give you 6 or 7 home games yearly. ASU needs to get its attendance back up to where they were 10/15 years ago....which is possible thereby taking some of the financial strain off football.

This probably off topic, but the ASU grads at my work have U of A season tickets for football. I am not pulling against SBC football because I see it as a point of leverage in the quest to get us a better TV deal. Now, we don't seem to have the leadership in the SBC front office make it happen.

Anyway, If Denver and UNO go and we are the only non-basketball school that take the league down to 11 and 10 football schools? What are ideal numbers for each sport for scheduling?

I like the 18 game conference schedule we have now. It probably allows us to schedule without having to fill 3 move non-conference games wtih body bag games. I like playing other schools that are about the same level as us and beating them.

While beating other teams about the same level is fun, it does little to help our SOS/RPI. I like what WKU did this past year. They played Louisville, Florida State and Mississippi State. While they only won one of them, they were rewarded with a much better RPI. If you don't win the tourney, you need a better RPI than what we had this past year.

therein lies the problem. Traitors.
I've often wondered if these idiots that support other schools instead of the ones they attended will do the same thing if their children go to one school in town and if they are stupid enough to support the opposing schools team just because it's politically correct to do so. Or, if their kid played for ASU would they still support UAf over ASU?

I have never understood that myself. I personally know of a case where the Father and both Sons attended ASU, one of the sons on a partial athletic scholarship. Yet, none of the 3 will give ASU the time of day, all are hog fans.

It baffles me too. I am connected to dozens of people online, all UALR graduates around the time I went there in the 90's, who do not show any loyalty or support of UALR athletics whatsoever, at least on their social networking pages. It's all Razorbacks. I think one or two might have given a nod to the Trojans, but that is it. Many others attend games but it is not cool to talk up the Trojans much in public. It's just plain weird how people do that in this state. It is a cultural juggernaut that transcends ordinary sports fandom. I can't blame them, it's the way they were raised. My dad was born and raised in AR, attended UAF, graduated from UAMS and although a supporter and recipient of Hog football tickets for years never fervently pushed the "hog religion" with me. He never had the shirts and bumper stickers, but still always rooted for his alma mater. I guess you could say I learned how to be a regular sports fan rather than a pig worshiper. I support the sport I enjoy watching (basketball) at the school I attended (Little Rock). I also enjoy following other teams, Hogs included. Why is that so weird?

We ended up in a similar place but took different roads. I support the Trojans because they are my local team. I'm a UAF alum and have kids attending there. My parents went to school up north, so no influence.

Never gave asu a minute's thought before becoming a Trojan fan. As a Hog fan, asu simply doesn't exist. Don't know if that was Coach Broyles doing, or that they are just irrelevant. Probably a bit of both.

Believe me ASU exsists for thousands. As to who ASU alumni will pull for in a game with the Hogs. When we played them in the NIT game in Fayetteville our alumni turned out in droves wearing our colors and yelling for the TRIBE. Many of my friends who attend Hog games were in attendance supporting their school....ASU.

I also believe Hog fans know we exist....just look at their boards from time too time and see the anti ASU threads.

I graduated from Henderson State, got my masters at the UofA, but any money that I give goes to UALR. I grew up a hog fan, but switched over to UALR when Newell came here. My kids went to UALR. That's were my loyalties lie. I quit rooting for the hogs when the powers that be tried to shut down the Trojans. I still root for Henderson to win, but want to watch D-l ball. I've been to two Henderson games since I graduated in '65.

Another thing I don't understand is the practice by UALR to reward, Hall of Fame etc to long ago people who played for LRU or LRJC but have had no interest in UALR since and don't plan on caring in the future. That applies to former players in more recent years. Ball Players are well compensated for playing ball at the school. After leaving, if they have no interest in the program at all, forget em, move on.

The reason I don't feel like a traitor to either Henderson or the UofA is that I never received one penny from either school. When I played baseball at Henderson, they were not giving scholarships at that time.

That's not really true. You often see ex-Triojans at games, etc. Jake Yancy and Ryan Moss come to mind. Not sure if they give money, but one guy named Derek Somethingorother did give 700,000 dollars to the school and funds a community outreach program through the basketball team. He also meets with them any time they go on a west coast road trip, visits when he's in town, and made a special trip during the Sun Belt Tournament to give them a pep talk. He's been VERY good to us and has never forgotten where he came from! 04-cheers

I'm the same way. I graduated from Hendrix College. No interest in their sports other than passive acknowledgement, because no one cared about sports there anyway (too bad, too).

I'm a Trojan fan because I'm from Little Rock, but mainly because my dad taught at UALR for many years and raised me on Trojan basketball. I remember asking my dad at a very early age why we never played the Hogs, and it was then I was told the awful truth of the Hogs monopoly on the state. Though I must admit, dad just told me the Hogs refuse to play in-state teams, and I took it from there!

And yes, Hogism is such a good term because it truly is a cult-like following. Just listen to the idiots who call in to Drive Time Sports to ask about Hogs recruiting no matter what else in the world is going on. We could be in the midst of nuclear war and we'd have some yokel calling in, asking about how we think Ryan Mallett is going to do this year for the billionth time.

The only other thing I can compare Hogism to is Aggie fans. My best friend lives in Houston, and it's the same way with them. They too have their weird chants and their blind unquestioning following and complete parroting of what the official university position is.

That is what Arkansas is: a bigger Texas A&M.

Glad to see another Trojan Fan who is a Hendrix Grad. I'm the class of '73, so probably a touch older than you, but in typical Hendrix fashion, you sized things up well for a lot of us.

By the way, Hendrix Night with the Travelers at Dickey Stephens is August 7th. Mark it on your calendar and hope to see you there!

RE: UNO Athleics In Trouble
I live just over 2 hours from ASU. I don't go to the plays, concerts and cultural events the school sponsors. Going to basketball on anything other than a Saturday isn't practical on a regular basis, but I go to football games and in turn I've stayed connected and give money to the school for academic purposes.

We are small fish in the FBS pond but having an event that can get 25,000 people on campus many coming in from a couple hours away or out-of-state has value to the university.

If the only value of athletics is high achievement then the majority of the 300 plus Division I institutions ought drop basketball. In say the last 20 years how many teams have advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament one or more times? If Sun Belt schools shouldn't be playing football because they can't win the championship or aren't likely to make a BCS bowl game, then what are we doing playing Division I basketball? The only Final Four was WKU's and it was vacated for rule violations. When has one of the current Sun Belt members made the Great 8? Making the Sweet 16 every 15 years isn't exactly being a first class citizen in Division I basketball. To my recollection, no current Sun Belt team has been ranked in the Top 25 since UNO in 1991 and that was in the American South.

The second or third class citizen argument against Sun Belt football isn't a very good one when it also describes the state of basketball.

Tell me...were you a Hardin man or a Martin man?

Actually neither. I transferred to Hendrix in the middle of my sophomore year from Westminster College in Missouri. I always lived off campus in Conway during by time at Hendrix.

I don't think that anybody thinks that ASU or any other SBC school having football is a bad idea. Hell, I wish UALR had a football program I could root for. The point is that I can see no reason why the league has abandoned its original reason why it was created - ie - basketball- to become so eaten up with football.

But I do think having football is great for any University or college. I'm fired up about Division III football returning to Hendrix soon after almost a 50 year absence. And don't you know I was fired up last season when the Richmond Spiders won the I-AA football National Championship!
