Actually, 3 miles off the US gets you into international waters.
But you have to go 6 miles off Texas to get outside Texas waters.
And there's a Supreme Court case to prove it.

Already being done; there is at least one structure in the English Channel that is claiming "sovereignty".

IIRC, the structure was one built by the British in WWII as some sort of 'channel lookout' post.

In the 60's or 70's, a family moved into the abandoned structure. They have set themselves up as the Prince and royal family.

They are aiming for banks and internet hubs as "inhabitants". I think the place calls itself "Sealand" (but im too lazy to look it up.....)

This is correct. It started out as a pirate radio station in the late '60s. It's an interesting story IMO.
