I had posted earlier that they would replace Calipari on the lineup as he is no longer our coach. But, the website listed here has him as "The University of Kentucky" coach. So, it seems he'll be there.
So Tiger fans? What do I do? Do I sit politely and let him speak? Will others join in the booing if I start? Do I throw something or take some kind of action that could put my job in jeopardy? Am I a good Tiger fan if I don't?
My plan right now, is to sit quietly, but do not applaud, do not laugh at any joke, hopefully it will spread and he will hear crickets.
Well, it was what it was. A group of Kentucky people sat at a table right in front of the podium. The guy that introduced him read from Calkin's column "Boy, he can talk" and talked about the media attention when he left for Kentucky, how it was like electing a new pope.
When introduced, the Kentucky table stood up and applauded. They were the only ones. Maybe a couple of more, but that's it.
Calipari talked, yes he's good at it. Him bringing up Kansas and Tennessee last year doesn't help the healing process at all. It was his whole "bounce back" speech about how people love comebacks. Blah blah blah. He wants to touch lives and help people... Blah blah
He said his dream was to have a team go 40-0. It took all I had not to stand up and scream "You could've had that at Memphis! Next year!".
A guy from the Memphis Chamber stood up and you could hear the nervous laughter in the room. I thought, "oh boy, here it comes!". Then he just thanked him for bringing us to another level and hoped he wins a National Title at Kentucky. I threw up in my mouth a little.
He finished, he got a standing O that felt Obligatory from the crowd. I didn't join in, I wasn't the only one. But it wasn't as cold of a response he got at Harrah's, from the CA article I read about it.
I know, its time to get over it and move on. And I am moving on. But today I didn't get a choice. Pastner better be here next year.
