RE: Global sea ice
Global warming is nothing more than a grand plan to destroy capitalism and have a socialist world government.

I think the following picture says it all.

Robbie, for a moment let's forget the debate about global warming being real or not, OK? Right now we have a war on 2 fronts, a major recession, Iran is building nukes and Israel wants to attack them over it, N Korea is acting up, our banking system is going down the shitter, the auto industry is dying, and on and on. Do we really have the time and resources to deal with global warming (if it's real) now?

What we really need is a cure for the common liberal.

As a general rule, it appears that the peaks are getting shorter and the valleys deeper. It's a short term chart, but it does look like the global levels of sea ice are actually slowly declining.

What changed in 1995?

I'm sure someone will link that to the republicans regaining control of congress. But it's hard to see a causal relationship.

What did happen in 1995? Any ideas?

Or maybe this whole thing is cyclic and the cycles occur for reasons that transcend human action. Who knows?

As I said, this is a very short term graph (of course, the information probably wasn't available prior to 1979 - it'd be hard to do a survey by boat). I have no idea if the sea ice levels were abnormally high prior to 1995 and the current levels merely a return to the mean or if there is even a mean level in any meaningful sense. Several posters, however, were trying to use this chart as proof that global warming doesn't exist when it shows nothing of the sort.

I have no idea if global warming (or climate change) is real. I have no idea what contribution we humans make, or even if we make any at all. I don't trust computer models any more than I do the BCS. But too often people on both sides of the debate refuse to honestly examine the evidence, instead cherry picking only the information that fits into their preconcieved agendas. This chart shows a gradual decline in the area of sea ice, and while I'm fairly certain that the global climate is too complex for there to have been a single event in 1995 that caused the change, it seems foolish to dismiss it out of hand. Or worse, to pretend that it shows otherwise.
