the problem with AIG's deriviatives, are not the deriviatives themselves but the type of loans that were out there. They didn't account for the type of defaults this program would eventually produce

At the end of the day, if the underlying asset performs the bets made on them don't matter.

The bets made on the assets had nothing to do with that person taking out loans they couldn't afford in the long run, spending lavishly, or the guy who had no real estate experience taking out loans on six spec homes in Phoenix and Las Vegas only to see those bets go bad.

The "poor victim American taxpayer" is to blame just as much as anyone else.
