If some of the mid majors, such as St. Mary's, were in as at large teams, you'd have the possibility of more wins. And I'm not talking about quantity. I'm talking about quality. That's the problem of a tournament winner being the league representative. In a number of cases, the best teams from one bid conferences probably don't go to the dance because of one game upsets. I believe in the entire body of work for the season determining the NCAA rep. Western was obviously the best in our league this year, but thankfully, since we didn't win it, they did. Anyone else in our league wouldn't have beaten Illinois yesterday, and Western came close to blowing it. Let the rest of the teams play in a tournament to decide the NIT rep. Just my demented brain at play again. I know some will disaagree, but I hold to my opinion. 01-lauramac2

They don't go because they don't deserve to go. If you are good enough and you don't win, you get an at-large. Sun Belt has done it several times in recent history.

You mention Mount St Mary's. They lost 4 out their last 7 games, playing in the always-dominate Northeast League. Strong.

The point of the NCAA tournament is to crown a National Champion. It's not a feel-good, let's-be-fair-to-the-mid-majors-just-because tournament.

The thing I don't like about the tournament is that it is more about who is hot than who is good. More often the two are the same, but not always.

I would contend that the two are closely related. Those that are "hot" are usually pretty darn good. That's why they're "hot".

There have been a lot of teams that have won three or four games in a row who were not particularly good teams on the whole. But if you get hot at the right time you get a disproportionate share of attention.

I suppose you could argue that the coaches know that at the start of the year and it is thier job to prepare in such a way that they will peak in March.

Not Mt. St. Mary's. That's a different team. St. Mary's had a very high RPI. #48. They were 26-6, and many of the pundits who don't cow tow to the BCS teams thought they got screwed. Along with San Diego State who had an RPI of #34. So much for the RPI, unless you're a BCS team, and they use that to justify you getting into the tournament.03-banghead

Good day today...Siena, Cleveland State, and Dayton pull off wins over "power 6" teams. Five more opportunities for wins over "power 6" teams in the next round.
