I'd leave Bobby where he is, take Bill off completely and replace him with someone younger. I know who should do it and would be great, not just for ETSU but would be able to hold his own regionally and nationally. He would just need help, a three man show with this guy hosting along with Gerald (The ex athlete) and someone from the media field that has credibility but isn't afraid to bust balls either, when necessary. The formula works (See: 3HL, Midday 180, Sports 180, whatever the afternoon drive show is called in Knoxville). Honestly they should look at someone like Erik Ainge to do that. And if Bill wanted to stay on, put him on either 10-noon or noon-3. Caller friendly sports radio has shown that it's a proven winner. Bill still is convinced he's Paul Finebaum. I guess they had classes together at UTK and perhaps that green eyed monster is in full effect.

Don't underestimate the power of advertising dollars. These hosts will take up for their clients on the air whether they agree with them or not. ETSU spends a lot of money with that station. Games, coaches shows, etc amount to a lot of air time dollars.

Bill just doesn't talk about them unless he has to. All he cares about are UT and professional sports. ETSU is too small-time for him.

Bill is lazy. To talk ETSU would require phone calls and show prep vs reading articles off ESPN and commenting on them

Wonder if Ezell is on the way out. Morning Monster says if Bama fires their womens coach, Ezell would be high on their list.

I doubt Alabama will fire Kristie Curry after two seasons. The program was a bona fide disaster when she got there, and she's ultimately won everywhere she's been. They are pretty young, too. Way too soon to give up on a coach that has taken a team to the NCAA Championship game.

We could certainly lose Coach Ezell but probably not to them, at least not this year.

Good to hear him back on there yesterday...Guy from 247 sports pretty much guaranteed a Tennessee win over Florida this season and picks the Vols to finish second in the East or possibly win it over Georgia.

RE: Sports Monster
How long are we (and ETSU) going to be ok with the 3pm local show on the "flagship station of the Bucs" never having any guests, segments or even TALK of ETSU? We had the spring game this past weekend and he is talking about new bowl games?!?

I know everyone clowned on Pitt's post at the beginning of this thread but it is spot on. Bill Meade is the voice of the dumb sports fan in this area. If there was more ETSU talk in the afternoon, drive home time slot, instead of the occasional "hey good job on that upset win of GA Tech in bball. don't expect more of that." or maybe if he explained why ETSU football is going to take a few years to be competitive then maybe some of the casual fans would be more into ETSU sports.

RE: Sports Monster
So he's still lazy, then. Until he brings in a producer, who screens his calls and plans his show for him nothing will change. Truthfully, afternoon drive should be a 2-3 person show that's caller friendly with Bill moved into a mid morning/midday day part. He pretends he's Paul Finebaum, but he isn't.
Sports talk in this state, and especially up there should be Titans and Vols heavy, then a lot of ETSU talk. There's no reason that while major sports are in season, that there shouldn't be daily guests from each. And since Bill likes to talk high school, there's no excuse in him not bringing on Chad Withrow from Nashville as well as Murphy Fair during the fall for high school football talk. Since it's close to the Stanley Cup playoffs, he should at least mention the Predators and bring on someone for that, too.
His show would be easy to plan out. Titans guests include: Paul Kuharsky, Mark Howard, Teresa Walker, Mike Keith, Jim Wyatt.
Vols: Just pick the zillion beat writers, radio homers, and a couple of university mouth pieces.
ETSU: Jay, Mike, and the coaches should be on weekly as well as Little Joe from the Press and any other ETSU beat writer.
NASCAR: Liz Allison, Allen Gregory, and anyone from the Charlotte media. Maybe bring on a couple of local track promoters to talk local racing and the Cup Series.
During football and basketball, callers should almost be non-existent. The fact he is STILL talking about the damn Celtics because he owns .0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001% of them is a disgrace.
But that's how they've always been serving their own needs over the needs of the Tri-Cities.

RE: Sports Monster
Here's his take on it. He's always said his show is caller driven vs. caller friendly, meaning the callers drive the sports topics they talk about. Nevermind Bill reading entire articles on the air or essentially just reading off the ESPN wire for entire segments then going to break. When he takes calls, he let's them "drive the show" as they say. The best solution is to organize, and flood his show with calls about ETSU. He's so unprepared to talk about it he'll get flustered on the air and probably stop taking calls altogether. He threatened it one time over people calling in demanding its' return, it was quite funny. So ram it down his throat, he wants caller driven, give it to him. Load his lines up about ETSU athletics. Make him talk about that pedestrian baseball team.

This morning was a perfect example of the difference between Bobby and Bill, not only did Bobby have Mike Keith on to talk about the Titans trading the 1st pick this morning
(Keith is a weekly regular during football season) but they have a such a good relation that Keith is the one who reached out to Bobby and asked if he wanted him to come on.

The morning show is pretty good. I really have no complaints with it. They do a good job mixing things up and talking about all the teams. Also do a good job bringing in relevant guests. A lot of times they would have the play-by-play guy for ETSU's opponent on.

Bill Meade is a good play-by-play guy but his show is beyond terrible. Just because the people who call in don't always want to talk ETSU (who has time to sit on hold that long) doesn't mean there aren't people who would rather hear about it than the Celtics, Bud Selig hate, Pete Rose, Dallas Cowboys hate or him reciting a whole article on the air.

I think Bobby does a great job and is always prepared. I enjoy Mon, Wed, and Fridays when he has Kenny Hawkins in studio for the entire show. I didn't always care for Kenny on WJHL, but over the years on the Monster, I've found him to be funny and self-depricating.

I cannot tolerate Tuesdays and Thursdays when Steve Haas (aka BUD) is on the show. He seems to be the "get off my lawn guy" regarless of what's being discussed. He always wants to take the devil's advocate position on anything that is popular in this area. Also, he doesn't watch that much sports, but has an opinion anyway.

Regarding Bill, I don't care for his show, but he is a very good play-by-play guy. I couldn't help but feel for him when he would do the arby's classic and had to listen to Paul Overbay for hour upon hour. I have NEVER heard anyone that made my want to break my radio like Overbay used to. What a tool.

I like the whole week with bobby. Kenny and Bud are both great to me and it is great imo.

Bill Meade sucks hard and hates ETSU and I wish I could kick his ass to Knoxville.

I'm a regular morning listener. I like Bobby and Kenny but my favorite team is Booby and Bud. I feel they have tremendous synergy. And Bud is a huge ETSU supporter.

I don't listen in the afternoon much but don't agree that Bill hates ETSU. He seems to mainly focus on UT and not give ETSU or anything else much attention if it doesn't involve the Vols.

Bobby and Kenny are great. Bud needs to stick to playing music on WQUT.

The afternoon show needs some new blood.

"Bud" ought to be a huge ETSU supporter, that's where he went to school if I'm not mistaken.

I do wish they would talk more about ETSU on the show. They (esp Bill) say the calls drive the show, but we all know that isn't exactly true. If they pitch the right topic, it will bring in lots of calls, and I've seen that happen with ETSU before.

Wow the Sports Monster show this morning has been wonderful. Jay Sandos brought fans up on all the sports. Basketball(men's and women's), football, baseball, softball. The calls have been super about the the Bucs. It is great to have a team in contention for a championship! Fans are really getting behind this team. Thank you Don Helman for the great show.
