Okay, I'll bite.
What do the Hogs have to gain..? Yeah, yeah, I've heard it before. It's good for the State, it'll bring money to other schools, the Hogs will get an opportunity to prove that they're the best. Sports fans will love it. Yada, yada, yada.
I see 2 flaws in that thinking.
1. There are very few "sports" fans in the State. LOTS of Hog fans, not many "sports" fans. This is evidenced by a) that radio show you guys are drawn to, and b) our attendance. If there were "sports" fans, folks would be talking up the Trojans and selling out our relatively small arena. They don't and we don't.
2. Haven't the Hogs created separation (or a 2-tier "perceived" system) by not playing us..? It's like we don't exist, and if we don't play, how can we exist..? If you take the emotion out of it, it seems that Coach Broyles really did build a State-wide fire wall by not playing us (or the hooves for that matter). From their perspective, what do they have to gain..? Why acknowledge something that is below their self-perceived status...?
Blast away. I'm just stating the obvious.
Ok, here we go:
1) I agree with what you say about there being few "sports" fans...you're right. If there were we WOULD have more "casual interest" fans wandering into The Jack on any random night. Can't argue with that.
2) I thinkg the Hogs DO have something to gain, beyond that stuff listed above. Aside from the money for the state and schools arguments I don't think the other one listed really has any teeth. No one is under any illusions that Arkansas 90-95% of the time is the better team.
Here is what the Hogs have to gain, aside from those "classic" arguments:
1) money. they make money now, but they could even make MORE playing us.
2) a few more fans. yes, they have plenty, but then there's that small enclave of fans that are holding out because of "The Policy". More fans mean more money.
3) a better RPI come tournament time. Play UALR or ASU instead of Prarie View A&M or Montevallo and voila! You just got a better RPI and SOS to show off come tournament selection time. This will increase the odds of getting into the tournament and it will lead to more money.
4) recruiting. No doubt a Hogs home game is some crazy environment and great to take a recruit to. But I bet it wouldn't even approach the environment an Arkansas/UALR game would generate! That means a better bargaining chip for recruits, which means better recruits, which means better chances of making the NCAA Tournament, which means more money.
5) competition is good for business. Arkansas competes with the SEC, sure, but if they had to comete even a little in their own state, LIKE EVERY OTHER STATE IN THIS COUNTRY, they would be better prepared for the SEC, which means they would win more, which means more NCAA Tournaments, which means more MONEY.
6) I've got to believe that since every other big state school in the country has no problems playing in state teams, that they must have found a good business reason to do so, whatever that reason might be. Why shouldn't it apply to UAF?
Does UAF dominate the sports scene in this state? Absolutely. Has The Policy directly contributed to that? Definitely.
Does popular opinion state that UAF doesn't quite have enough in the tank to be a consistent, top-level SEC team along the likes of Florida or LSU or Tennessee? Yes. Would playing in-state teams increase revenue and quality to push them closer to that level? I think it would.
That's why I think UAF stands to gain a great deal by playing us, beyond just the usual arguments.
But one thing I've been meaning to ask, Scotto: are you just playing devil's advocate and really wish they would play us, or do you really believe in and support The Policy?
