The Today Show on the Stimulus Package
I believe they said that the package currently under consideration amounts to almost $10,000 per person.
WHY are we bothering with the middle-man?? You could employ 20% of the population at $50,000 per year with that kind of money... OR, you could simply give everyone $10,000
I'm not suggesting this is a good idea... I'm just wondering why it takes spending $1 trillion dollars to "save or create" a few million jobs, and why nobody is asking that question??

RE: The Today Show on the Stimulus Package
I think the republicans are asking questions but are being shouted down. Last time I looked the package contained a lot of pet projects the democrats want but won't stimulate anything. The simplest way to stimulate the economy is to reduce taxes and create public works projects. The development of military hardware has always been a tried and true way of building the economy but yesterday I heard that several military projects have been cancelled.

$1 trillion / 333,000,000 people (probably a slight exaggeration of population, but close enough) = slightly more than $3000 per person. Maybe it was an average family would get $10K.

Give me $3000.00 no strings attached and I promise not to spend it all at one place and not all at one time.

Reduce my taxes and I'll spend more money. Spread that out across the country and things will get better.

330 million people includes every man, woman, child and about 80% of those here illegally.
I got news for all of you, your not going to see any of your share of the money, it will be going into the accounts of those who don't need it. That the Democrat's way.

Hambone said everyone gets $10K... didn't say household. I was just doing the math showing that the Today Show was wrong.

Reduce unnecessary regulations, and reduce the federal payroll. You really need all three...but once you do that...things can get very good.

No offense... but the Today show quoted some agency... like the CBO. They weren't wrong... I just didn't get the details... I was hoping someone had actually heard it and could clarify it... not simply dismiss it because the back of the napkin math doesn't work. Perhaps is it household... perhaps it is people over 18...
Even if the number is $3,000... for every man, woman and child in the country?? That's a fair amount of stimulus to only create or save (I believe I've heard) an estimated 4-5mm jobs. I think giving everyone $3,000 would create more jobs than that, AND obviously be more likely to reflect the desires of "the people"....
Again, I'm not saying its a good idea... but If you're going to spend $1 trillion, perhaps we should get a more personal say in how it is spent.

RE: The Today Show on the Stimulus Package
People... am I the only one concerned that we are spending $1 trillion dollars to "save" a few million jobs?? Why isn't anyone asking why it takes $250,000 to create/save a job that probably pays 20% that amount?

Quote:President-elect Obama said Saturday an analysis of his stimulus proposals shows that between 3 million and 4 million U.S. jobs could be saved or created by 2010, nearly 90% of them in the private sector.
The analysis of Obama's estimated $800 billion plan to lift the country out of a year-long recession was submitted by the chair of his council of economic advisers, Christina Romer, and by Vice President-elect Joe Biden's chief economic adviser, Jared Bernstein.
