This Weekends Visits
I know on a few different threads there has been mention of a few guys who are going to come in on a visit this weekend, does anyone else think that's probably a bad idea if these kids come from the south?

Snow is one thing, but the terrible cold can't be too much help for coach Kill. You really can't walk them around and show them things, maybe you can drive them around...after the car/van warms up for about 30 mins...again, this probably isn't going to help us.

On 2 of the kids we know are coming up we are recruiting against some southern schools like La Tech, FAU, ULL, etc. Here is hoping for a miracle warm up.

Or worse than the cold, they drive through Chambana on the way up here, that would send me right back where I came from, and in a hurry :)

I hope so!

This is going to be a big class, and the juco guys who are already on campus don't have to count towards this year's class, so Kill has even more scholarships to give out.

The weather is supposed to warm up a bit this weekend. Should be in the mid 20's tomorrow so not too bad.

No offense, but that is the definition of an oxymoron.

We're celebrating temps in the 20s. 03-lmfao 03-lmfao

I agree with NIU05. The prospects of playing and getting TV time and buying into the program will mean more then the temp. If they don't expect cold in Jan they we don't need their "intelligence" on our team . . .

No one says they don't "expect" it. They may not LIKE it.

It's one thing to hear, read or watch on TV about how cold is the Midwest in winter but a totally different story when experienced firsthand for the first time.

I remember the last deep arctic blast fifteen + years ago when my former colleagues from Montgomery, Alabama first stepped off the plane at OHare and yelled :
" Are you kidding me? I'm getting back on the plane and heading wherever its going next until I get warm again."

One actually refused to stay and booked a flight home the same afternoon she landed at OHare.

We had all repeatedly warned them in advance prior to their first venture to Chgo in winter.

Kill sure is loading up at the receiver position if that's true.

Martel Moore and Anthony Johnson

Warren's success takes flight

Warren coach Bryan Dausin describes his offensive philosophy as “any way we need to win.”
Input File ContentThe given include file is empty.

Typically, that's meant pounding opponents into submission via the run, a method he honed to perfection in previous stints at Roosevelt and Marshall.

“We always want to establish a good running game,” Dausin said. “So many positive things happen from that.”

Such as state championships, like the one he and the Rough Riders won in 1995 with a pair of running backs surpassing 1,500 yards.

This season, however, Dausin's Warriors have increasingly taken to the air.

With quarterback Daniel Horstman launching strikes to playmaking receivers Martel Moore and Anthony Johnson, Warren has won five straight to dig out of an 0-2 hole.

The trio had its best collective effort of the season Friday, combining for 252 yards and four touchdowns in a 45-34 comeback victory over previously unbeaten and No. 1 Clark. Horstman threw for 326 yards overall to smash the previous school record by more than 100 yards. His four passing TDs also set a school mark.

The result put the Warriors on track — six years after their 1-9 debut in 2002 — to claim their first district title.

“We feel really good about where we're headed,” said Johnson, who caught two scores and ran for another. “We're just going to try to keep it going.”

Warren's aerial success fulfils a mandate Dausin gave to first-year offensive coordinator Josh Littrell.

“His emphasis to me was, let's open up the passing game a little bit,” said Littrell, a Kansas City, Mo., native who volunteered at Warren last season after spending several seasons in Del Rio. “All he could talk about was those two receivers, how talented they were. We needed to get these guys involved.”

The only question was how.

With the graduation of two-year starter Ross Dausin, the Warriors entered the offseason with no experience under center. The original plan was to start Johnson as a dual-threat runner/passer.

But as spring practice wore on, it became impossible to ignore Horstman's progress. The junior-to-be secured the starting job with an impressive performance during 7-on-7, a development that pleased Johnson as much as it did Horstman.

“I really liked it, because I like receiver better,” Johnson said.

“I was excited,” said Horstman, his face splitting into a huge smile. “I knew I'd be the starter by my senior year. But I didn't want to just play one year. I wanted to beat him out.”

Warren's passing game took further shape with an injury to slot receiver Aaron Salinas. Moore, typically employed out wide, moved inside, where the Warriors' brain trust discovered his aptitude for making plays on screens and short slants.

Now the Warriors, who play Taft on Saturday, have two interchangeable weapons, able to either outjump — Johnson is 6-foot-3, Moore 6-2 — or outrun the undersized cornerbacks that man most high school secondaries.

“We have the option to do the same things with either one of them,” Littrell said. “If the defense focuses on one, then we're going to go to the other.”

Making the duo even more dangerous is Horstman's rapid improvement. Since his underwhelming debut in a Week 0 loss to Judson (6 of 11 for 52 yards), the young quarterback has thrown 12 touchdowns with only two interceptions over the past six games.

Along the way, he's discovered a simple, yet effective, secret to success

“I just throw the ball up there,” Horstman said, “and I know (Moore and Johnson) are going to catch it. I'm not even worried about it.”

Sharing the load
In two victories over fellow District 28-5A contenders O'Connor and Clark, Warren 's Daniel Horstman connected with either Anthony Johnson or Martel Moore for all seven of his passing touchdowns. Horstman, a 68 percent passer this season, has completed 74.3 percent of his throws the past two weeks. Following is a stat breakdown of the three players in the two key games:
QB Daniel Horstman WR Anthony Johnson WR Martel Moore
Opponent Score C-A-I Yds TD Rec Yds TD Rec Yds TD
O'Connor 33-14 13-17-1 239 3 7 94 2 5 143 1
Clark 45-35 13-18-0 326 4 6 128 2 4 124 2
Two-game totals 26-35-1 565 7 13 222 4 9 267 3
Season totals 79-117-3 1,224 12 30 411 5* 34 649 7

*: Johnson also has rushed for four TDs in spot duty at quarterback.

This weather is tough enough for those of us who have lived here for over a half century. I would expect that some Florida kids who have never experienced what we have here will turn right around and go home. So be it...just the way it is.
