I'm not a Kill fan at all, but I"m not sure that was because of him or because Andy D. wasn't much of a punter this season.

RE: New Verbal
that stupid ass rugby punt can be either awful or excellent...I recall it working well for SIU vs NIU.
Several schools utilized it with varying degrees of success last year....Oklahoma not being one of them.

It's either a feast or famine high risk play.

It's more about proper execution IMO than efficacy or wisdom.

Most prefer seeing punts with great hang time and distance beyond 38 yards with little or no return.
Little doubt there is much room for improvement for NIU.

For years punters frequently aimed for the coffin corners. Seems like we don't see alot of that much anymore....why?

Rabid, the long snapper doesn't block a 300 lb. player, you aren't allowed to rush a long snapper because of the injury risks. That's why guys like Pat Mannely are able to stay in the league.

You are allowed to rush him, but you can't be lined up directly over him.

University of Pheonix. The Cardinals play in there stadium.

Phoenix College? Yes, yes they do have a football team - which is where our guy went. Phoenix is actually a pretty decent football program, this guy is a good pick up.
No football team but they do have the stadium. Well, at least the naming rights to the stadium. I thought he did his kicking online03-yawn

Trust me....it's not so hard to get your kicks online.

Long snappers are protected on field goals, but they're fair game on punts. Granted, most receiving teams are shooting gaps to tie up the coverage; but on occasion when they have the rush on, and it can get pretty hairy. Patrick Mannelly is no Rambo (He's from Duke, 'nuff said )but he's 6'5" and 265. Also, long snappers are one of the first (along with the gunners) to release into coverage after the snap. While the guys may not burn down the field, the middle alley gets pretty violent...

NCAA rules prohibit defenders from hitting a center in the head or neck after he has snapped the ball. Because he is bent down; until he gets his head up he's in a vulnerable position. He releases early precisely b/c he isn't blocking a huge guy. That's why he's one of the first down the field.

RE: New Verbal
It seems like such an oxymoron for the AZ Cardinals to be playing in the Uof P Stadium which is basically an online university without athletics. ( I am a former Uof P employee - of sorts - having once worked for an IL private college under contract with U of P. )

Naming rights to the stadium is kinda like having that " front porch " to a university we often hear about but without all the annual headaches building winning teams, hiring and firing coaches, appeasing donors, bailing players from jail, wrastlin' with the media etc etc...

I thought the root of this discussion was about the possibility of Owen being a long snapper in the NFL?

Even in college, they're protected on field goal attempts... and fair game on punts after the snap (ask a NCAA special teams coach, I did).

When the rush is on, look out:

NIU's biggest problem with it was that they telegraphed the crap out of it. First off, Salerno was the guy doing the rugby punts later on in the season. So, anyone with a brain would notice and think, "Hey, it's the rugby punt guy." Then, in case that wasn't enough, we motioned the left gunner across the formation.... nice and slooooooowly. The upside of the rugby punt is it cuts the field in half. The downside is you can only go to one side unless you have an ambedextrious punter. Against Miami, the returner saw the motion (after seeing it the time before) and cheated up, caught the thing on the run, and blew past the coverage.

Hello Wilberrrrr... Interesting read. He claims some big time schools have looked into his services. This kid also seems like quite the character, and it's interesting to note what our player's/coach's sales pitches may have been to him ( Did you guys know that our long snapper's going to be in the NFL in two years? More power to Nolan Owen, but he better start downing some serious protein shakes if that's going to be the case). From the looks of him, he looks like a graduate of the Todd Sauebrun school of macho punters. (5'10", 205 in HS w/ a 4.8 40 and a 340lb bench. I take it he won't be settling for pushing guys out of bounds)

This photo is much more Sauerbrun-like...looks like he put on a few lb's since HS
http://www.pc.maricopa.edu/data/GlobalFi...%20Pic.jpg

His punting resume tape on youtube is longer than Reggie Bush's hs clip reel, but at least he seems to have quite the leg. I figure we'll be talking about the kid a bit more on this site in the next couple years; usually don't presume that out of punters. I hope it's mostly positive stuff and nothing to do with the police blotter.

Welcome aboard, kid. Enjoy the beer nuggets.

I HOPE THATS A COMPLIMENT................ CAUSE FOR WHAT I KNOW I AM A GOOD PICKUP FOR NIU..... the truth behind me choosing NIU is its a team with lots of potential. I didnt want to wait to see if I had to walk on to a bigger division I school because the scholarship wasnt on paper!!!! I also have family in Chicago and my uncle teaches at NIU. The weight gain is going down as well and that gain actually increased my hang time to as high as 5.3 seconds!!!! Hit me up if you want to ask questions or talk crap its whatever...

Welcome to the board and also to Huskie family.

I'd assume you are on campus now, correct?

Indeed, welcome to the NIU family and to the board. Hopefully we only get to see most of your handiwork (or footwork, to be more precise) during pregame or halftime, but I'm sure the rest of the gang on the board joins me in wishing you the best of luck for the upcoming season. Are you in fact in DeKalb right now? Hopefully you've visited your family in Chicago a few times before or your that your uncle has been straight up with you about the weather...I know plenty of folks who've gone from IL to AZ, but you're one of the first I can recall heading west to east. (oh, and congrats if you're a Cards fan...my cousin in Scottsdale has been going apesh*t the last couple of weeks)

A few Q's if you don't mind...

1) If you didn't select NIU or CSU, which school do you think you would had the best chance at heading to in the fall?

2) Has Coach Kill talked to you about rugby punting? what are your thoughts about that technique instead of say, coffin corners or hangers to limit returns? (Have you ever tried rugby-style kicks?)

3) If you're on campus...have you tried the damn beer nuggets yet? I graduated in 2000, but I do recall enjoying those little gems while hanging out, pre-gaming, drinkin...sodas, etc.

Again, welcome, and enjoy the many friendly (and some moronic) Huskie fanatics on the site!

I strongly suspect that participating on this or any board by players or recruits is something NOT recommended by coaching staff.

Even only reading this board occasionally could lead to emotional breakdowns or anger management classes if you were the player ragged on consistently by a Cult of Hypercritics with obviously too much time on our hands.

Why not just give him fair warning about what to expect from certain posters? (MD, NIJ, Boowie, Woowie, T. Bone, or whatever he wants to call himself)

Isn't this what the board is for?

I agree. If players and players parents are going to read and participate on this board, they should have thick skin. I don't agree with personal attacks on a players character but whether he/or she is a good player or made a bonehead play is what this board is about.

Until HMM starts the Huskie Radio show where I can call in daily to talk huskie sports, than this is all I have.

That radio show is a good idea. I'm thinking about doing a podcast in the near future.
