Can Jay Mitchell still redshirt?
He's basically missed about half the season and already 3 conferences games. I think long term if he's able to it will be better then him coming back midway through the conference games. Its kind of pointless to waste a year of eligibility for that.

RE: Can Jay Mitchell still redshirt?
From what I understand Owlsfan84 - he would have to apply to the NCAA for a medical redshirt. There are no guarantees that he would be approved to have a medical redshirt, but I would think that he would have an awful good case. Unfortunately if he is denied a medical redshirt I am not sure if there is any other course of action. I am also not sure if a player can apply for a medical redshirt in the middle of a season. Meaning, if he chooses to go this route he may have to sit out the entire year, THEN apply - thus risking being denied that medical redshirt and not playing in the final games that he possibly could have played in.

I am not sure what is going on, but I am with you, that at this point in the year if Jay could get a medical redshirt it would probably worth it, as it is going to take some time to get him into game shape anyway. He is looking at playing only 1/4 of the season healthy once all is said and done, and that would be a shame for him and our program.

Agreed. As I understand it, he would have to sit out the entire year and then apply. At this point, we're building for next year. I'm not "throwing away" this year in saying that, but let's face it: When faced with a decision between something that would benefit this season or next season, we have to choose next season at this point. But I'd be nervous as Jay Mitchell since the NCAA tends to be a bit more reluctant at giving a 6th year of eligibility to someone (he had a "normal" redshirt year during his transfer), although I'd think his case is very strong.

I think that Jay was an Academic All-Conference last year (3.0 GPA or higher) which I would think would help his case. He seems to be the depiction of a student athlete. I hope he either gets healthy soon, or is able to get a medical redshirt.
