How do you identify a shooter?
You can't go by scoring average alone, because in high school, many players are able to dominate inside and score on layups. I would say the most reliable area would be free throw shooting. Watch these teams with big white kids who can hit the outside shots. They are also very good free throw shooters.

Dunking the ball or making layups doesn't require a lot of shooting touch. Mainly athletic ability. But shooting free throws requires touch, which is what separates a shooter from a scorer. And some kids who score a lot in high school, aren't big enough to do it against bigger and better competition.

Think of our shooters. III and Stevie are both excellent free throw shooters. John Fowler, probably our third best shooter is good also.
In recruiting, I think the coaches should rate free throw shooting high on their priorities in rating perimeter shooting positions.

Is that how LSU found "Pistol Pete Maravich"?

When I think of a shooter I look at their form, release and rotation on the ball . It's especially evident on free throws. I agree that Stevie and Mouzy are at the top with Curtis Jackson next and Fowler fourth.

Have you noticed the ball rotate when BP shoots..? It spins sideways. Very unusual.

Well, shooting percentage is where they have to start. If he isn't making baskets, then he isn't a shooter. But then they also have to look at quickness of foot (can he get open) and quickness of release. Many shooters in high school couldn't make it at our level because they could never get their shots off.

You might be the only one except me who has ever noticed this. I have been at practice and sitting right under the goal when the kids were practicing free throws, and when you're that close you can see the spin of the ball, and you're absolutely right. Patterson's ball spins sideways, which explains why he isn't a very good perimeter shooter. I can't believe someone hasn't changed that along the way. It makes no sense.
