RE: Womens Team
I don't think Ellie Shields has regressed I think she played the same last year except for one big game. They would be a worse team with Kowalska and Shields playing together. I know you can't always tell by watching a player but I get the feeling Shields doesn't work very hard. Her offensive moves seem to be rushed (to the point of out of control). She can be the center next year but unless she improves a 10 minute per game role will be her high water mark. Odihambo seems to be improving and just could end up the starting center next year. I also believe they have a recruit coming in that could be part of the mix.

Chenel Harris at 5'11" is a tough match-up for most of the 4's in the league and she holds her own.

As far as defense is concerned the team is a little slow of foot. Lindsey almost never played zone (when he had at least 8 players) yet he is doing it this year. This might be a clue. So far we have had one good half and one bad half defensively. If you can do it for 20 minutes it seems like doing it for 40 should at least be possible. They opened with the three best teams in the league so 0-3 wouldn't suprise me. As well as we played non-conference we could end up in 4th in the East and the 5th best team overall. The MAC is really strong this year (11th in the country).

Also although I did not see the game I thought Miami had the best interior defense in the league last year so I imagine that caused us some trouble.

This is great we actually have a continuous thread going on the women's team. I hope they start to win a few in Conference so it keeps up.

RE: Womens Team
I really like what Harris has done this year. Miami's length appeared to affect her today. I believe she will bounce back like Bennett today from Wednesday.

I didn't see many games last year, but it seemed like Shields was useful. Maybe with so few players, she had to tally up stats by default. It just would have been nice to have a second big to combat Miami's length. I agree with what you said about the defense. Unfortunately, it shouldn't be a slow defense They are giving up size with a slender player at the power forward. They can't give up foot speed, too.

RE: Womens Team
Another struggle but we pulled it out. Since I think Ohio, Miami and Kent will be battling for second place and the bye it was good we did.

Three point shooting and Humes were the keys. For about 10 minutes Humes carried us and turned a 14 point second half deficit into a 4 point lead. We took about 20 3 pointers and hit about 60%. Spread them out very well so Ohio could not concentrate on only one player.

Beginning to worry about Kowalska as she now has had 7 fair to average halves (I am probably being nice). They played more man to man (I refuse to say person to person) today and it really helped in the second half.

Since they followed a men's game I lost the seat I have sat in for 20 years. To an Ohio fan no less. At least he was a pretty good guy and actually sat close by last year also. I do wish they would reserve seats for the womens games but everytime I suggest it they look at me like I'm crazy (and then they charge $150 to sit on plastic benches).

Saturday was a great example of the multitude of weapons contributing. The Kowalska slump is disconcerting. They will need her to be effective more often than not, or a weaker team will sneak up on them, especially on the road. Then of course, you have the other three good teams in the East the second and possibly third time around.

How about Stutzman's 3 at the end of regulation. They just walked her upcourt, set a couple screens and gave her enough room to shoot the tying 3. I gave a co-worker (who is a Lakers fan) a hard time about it because Kobe missed that exact shot in that situation Friday. I wonder if she should handle the ball more. In the couple games I have seen, she has just been a spot-up shooter on the wing. Maybe Stutzman can be a primary ball-handler when a particular matchup or game situation highlights Gibson's liabilities.

RE: Womens Team
I think that will happen but right now they have 5 people covering the 3 guard positions and Harkins only gets about 10-15 minutes. If you put Stutzman on the point Gibson basically becomes a 10 minute per game player (she can't play anywhere else). That means 30-35 minutes for Humes, Bennet and Stutzman and a situation nearing last year when it comes to depth. Gibson is average but she can play 25 minutes per game at the point without killing the team. She is somewhat like Mincy on the mens team except she can hit FT's and an occasional 3.
